It's been a struggle for me, but I'm understanding their view better as I've been part of the grading committee a few times now. It's not something I'm willing to discuss in detail.
I had an interesting discussion with one of the graders at my 2nd Dan Exam. I apologized for doing Bon Guk Kum Bop (a Korean form we do in addition to the regular Japanese Kata) so badly. I did the Japanese kata without major error and vanquished my opponent without problem. The grader has seen me at the competitions over the last five years and runs another dojang in our county. We are about the same age. He said to me "don't worry, it is important that we see that you are giving your best and that you have shown the right spirit".

I imagine that at some point "the right spirit" means less and your skill level is the absolute measure. But then, what do I know?
