Before you ask, no-one has stolen our dojo.

Last night, one of our members had his car stolen from outside of where we practice. His alarm went off just before the session started so he went out to reset it. The thief (or thieves) must have been watching because they followed him in to where we leave our bags and nicked his car keys. This was mega painful for him because he's only had the car for three weeks (and it's a new BMW - ouch!). But it was made more painful due to the fact that we used to have a secure place to leave our kit until some scrote stole something from that room and the school stopped everyone from using it.

Does anybody else have security issues at their dojo?

We had someone break into the dojo one night, he came in through the side window. Fortunately we were sleeping over for the weekend seminar we were running... The look on his face when he turned round to have about 30 swords in his face used by people who weren't happy with being woken up in the middle of the night was....entertaining I have never seen anyone so pleased to see a policeman and get arrested. I dont think discussing how to use him for tameshigiri helped his underwear much either.
Currently I insist everyone brings their stuff into the training area where we can see it, too many people have access to where we train so you darent risk it...

The headquarters to where I used to do Taekwondo was in a bad part of town. They got broken into all the time. They would steal trophies and trinkets. I'm surprised they never had anyone stay over night or something. The good news is they eventually moved to a better part of town.

Used to practice aikido in an industrial unit, we had a lounge upstairs with a TV and video in it that went for a walk while we were downstairs training, bloody lucky someone didn't happen to wander up really.

we practice in a community center in a not great part of town, i've been told a few people have had their cars broken into or stolen over the years. my dojo-mates always insist i don't walk out to my car alone, and that i don't leave anything of value on the seats. the main doors of the building are always locked (you always have to buzz to get in) to try and prevent less than honest people from wandering inside. not sure if anything has been stolen from the actual dojo.

this guy who does judo puts note on his bag that says "this bag belongs to a judo player. do not steal". the thief took the bag and left a note "this was stolen by sprint running, don't bother chasing".

Oh, how I would have loved to have seen that! We were probably still doing kata practice when that arsehole pinched the keys. Imagine the sound of bokuto on skull. Oooooh yeah!

Our practice venue has changed several times over the past several years.

Our previous spot was in a space that was previously a bar, but somebody bought it and cleared it all out. He subleased it to another guy who wanted to teach taekwondo, and since he didn't have enough students to fill the week's schedule, that guy let us work out in there a couple times a week for a flat fee.
The building was located in a line of other connected buildings that ran through the "strip" of the University of Memphis. Class was on Friday night and so, we'd have a lot of drunken college kids walking by the windows making fun and whatnot. Occasionally, someone might actually walk in and watch for a minute or two..

There was no place to store your gear... no changing rooms, so, basically, you'd just go as far away from the front door/windows to change. Sometimes, we would be sharing space with the taekwondo group at the far end, while we'd be up next to the door.

So one night (sorry for the long story), we were set up like that and we all had our gear up against the wall. Actually, everybody had their street clothes and bags against the wall. This one guy walked in just as we were lining up and watched. I was regularly (like, every 10 minutes) walking over to him and asking him stuff and he'd ask questions... legitimate questions of somebody who might be interested in kendo, actually... after watching for about 45 minutes, he got up to leave and waved goodbye.

I didn't realize at the time that he was sitting right next to my stack of street clothes the whole time. It just never dawned on me....
Sure enough, with me checking on him every 5 to 10 minutes, he managed to go through my stack of clothes and lift my wallet.

Bugger.

Needless to say, I keep a closer eye on my stuff now.

The only problem I've had was some asshat stealing my bikeseat when I chained my bike outside my dojo. I was pissed, the guy could at least have taken my whole bike so I would have an excuse to get a better one, but now I'm stuck with a crappy bike, that has an even crappier seat now :/

the worset thats ever happend in our dojo was when 2 kids from the school that used the sports center where are dojo is located sneeked in before our course and started throwing javilins in the dojo ... yea you heard me (dont know how they got them or how they got in but they did). they made about 25 or so holes on our brand new Tatamis that we replaced the week before.

Too bad for them me and a buddy alwasys show up 1hr in advance to get alittle Iai practice and spoted them and we where able to trace them back and the police picked them up for vadalism... funny thing is when the school came over to talk with our sensei about having the parents pay for damages he offered the 2 kids Aikibudo classes for a month and asked for an appoligy infront of the whole dojo.

the first week they felt pretty small in their keikogi and when they triped a couple of times in the holes they had made they started to understand why they shouldent make holes in tatamis.

it was a memorable month if i do say so myself we have never seen them again

i also got stuff stolen away from me during kendo->those yellow Lance Armstrong "Livestrong" wristbands that were popular a while ago. I was pissed and confused since the theif didn't take my brand new seiko watch that was in the same bag Anyways, i hope the guy gets his ride back. Doesn't german cars have satellite assissted anti-thef thingys??

Just to say that poor guy is MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.
luckily for me a couple of the guys live near to me and dropped me home.
i did manage to cheer myself up Tony its amazing how much better i felt after a few large beers last night.
CCTV thats a joke even though my car was parked right by the camara it didnt pick up anything.
still i do get to drive a KA around for a few weeks till i get my new one.

I'm sorry that your car got stolen though Chiefbuyer. I'm pretty sure that karma will come back around for those guys that took it though.

As far as Chidokan's story is concerned, I would have paid to see something like that. I also would have paid even more to participate in that too. It just seems like something out of a movie or something.

A bunch of guys went into the lockerroom at late-night hockey practice and lifted everything of value. Some days later, two people were found with busted thumbs and a couple of bruises that looked like hockey stick slapshots.... Don't condone it but serves them right...
