Sadly enough, there are (almost) no shops in Sweden that sell kendo equipment. But I am visiting Australia in March/April and thought that maybe it is a bit more common there.
So I ask you aussies, is there anywhere I can walk in to a store and actually try hakama, gi and other nice stuff before buying it?

We will be travelling mostly on the east coast and will visit Melbourne, Brisbane, Sidney and Cairns. So those are the areas I am most interested in.

Any help is appreciated

You can never try on hakama before buying it, but they can certainly hold it up and see if it's the right lenght

Kind of guessed it would not be able to test hakama, but feeling and seeing before buying is also nice. I was actually most intersted in gi.

They open by appointment. It's where I got my gi and hakama from ($110 for the set and the hakama is indigo dyed cotton. i've never seen a price like it and it's done me well)

There are the usual martial art shops in Sydney, Brisbane and Cairns but unfortunately they don't specialize in kendo gear. The last time I went they usually have the lite hakama and standard gi. Nothing special...

Can you fly with JAL and have a stop-over in Tokyo???? The stores here are awesome.

You'll have a ball in Australia. Do you want to do kendo while your travelling?

That is about the same situation as here. Too bad, I was hoping the closeness to Japan (relative from Sweden, of course) would help.

You'll have a ball in Australia. Do you want to do kendo while your travelling? Unfortunately not. It's a quite short trip (only two weeks), and I am going to travel with a lot of people who doesn't do kendo, and there seem to be quite a lot of stuff to look at in Australia already

If it wasn't for that I promise I would have been asking about dojos already, Australia seems to have a nice and strong kendo community. If I ever return I'll bring bogu and shinai with me

I was just thinking that perhaps there was a possibility to see an "offline" kendo store for once. Thank you anyway, i'll add those vendors to my list of kendo stores.

If you make a time with online kendo you can go visit them. That's what I did whilst I happened to be in Melbourne to save on shipping costs

+1 what Newbie said. Send Mike at onlinekendo an email and arrange a time to meet. He is in the process of reorganising his operation and my impression is that he won't always have so much stock on the ground in Aus, so it's a good chance to see what must be the biggest kendo store in the southern hemisphere. Particularly good for shinai, but he does also have plenty of hakama and kendogi in all sizes there, as well as bags, kendo knick-knacks, and even the odd bogu, pairs of kote, etc. What were you after?

Well you could easily leave there several 100 AUD lighter!

If you buy hakama, buy a higher grade cotton like #10,000. The cotton on their entry level hakama isn't great.

In shinai I highly recommend their koto shinai, "kenshin", "tatsujin" and "ikken", all madake. There is also a 'carbonised" koto shinai which is a bit more expensive but is supposed to resist drying out. They also have something I've never seen anywhere else, which is koto shinai made from keichiku bamboo. These are much cheaper than the madake ones but still have good balance. They are also good for competition because they are only about 515-520g.

I just thought I'd revive this thread since we (me and Solinde) will be on our way to Australia quite soon.

We thought it would be fun if we were able to stop by and watch any kendo or iaido practice while we are over, to not go mad from abstinence

Our travel plan looks something like this:
April 2-4: Melbourne
April 6-8: Sydney
April 9-12: Port Douglas
April 13-16: Brisbane

If there are any dojos in the area that have practice during the time we are there we would be most happy to come by and say hello and watch some australian kendo or iaido

Hi h2o, When you go to Port Douglas you will no doubt arrive in Cairns 1st. There is no Kendo club up there, the only one around for let's see,... about 1000km, is our Kendo Club in Cairns, Goshu Shobukan. Ben and Cool Cat are familiar with our resident Sensei here, Kuramochi Sensei. We are very lucky to have him in such an out of the way place.

April 9 - 12th will be Monday to Thursday. We will be training our normal 1.5 hour sessions on Monday and Thursday and we have a quick, half hour Keiko on Tuesday and Saturday nights. You would be more than welcome to join in or watch, we will have spare bougu and we are always happy to recieve a visitor. Cairns is not that big, only about 100,000 people I think? So if you are interested and have the time while you are here then pm me and we can arrange something.

It's funny though, usually when we have a visitor something happens to me or I have to go away suddenly, I always miss out on the visitor. Last time Cool Cat came I had just been called away unexpectedly to the next major Town up here. Last night,....I ran this huge flooring staple into my foot at a renovation house I am working on. Goddam it hurt! I hope it is healed enough by the time you come so maybe we can get some keiko in together, it's always good to play as many different people as possible, as they say.
