Default Kumdo
well, ive been trying to find a decent kendo dojo here in las vegas and it doesnt seem like its gonna happen,

so, it seems i must resort to kumdo

but, im gonna feel like crap learning kumdo because its kendo that i really wanted to learn... so anyway, to the point

isnt kumdo like a direct cheap ripoff of kendo? thats what it looks like and if thats true im gonna have to retire my search for the martial art until (god knows when) another kendo dojo randomly pops up somewhere

as far as the section, i have no idea where i was supposed to put this, so moderaters, move it where u wish

Kendo and Kumdo are pretty much the same thing save for a few differences in terminology, focus and customs. You can do Kumdo now and it would be completely transferrable to a Kendo dojo if you happen to move somewhere that has it.

Wow, you just totally disrespected a lot of people on this forum. Nice JOB!

Anyway, to the point. Kendo and Kumdo are the same. One is not a cheap rip off of the other.

I practice kumdo, and you can ask anyone on this board that knows my Dojang or me, that we aren't a cheap rip-off. We actually just won the Team tournament in the last AEUSK tournament.

before this turns into a kumdo/kendo discussion:

1.)kumdo is just the korean word for kendo derived from the same chinese characters.
2.) Kumdo's main association, the Korean Kumdo Association is a member of Kendo's IKF, and so the majority of kumdo dojangs in the US are recognized as certified schools by the other kendo dojos in the same country.
3.) The techniques are pretty much the same, but it's the styles that can be easily recognized as different when you watch a kumdo match vs. a kendo match. However, when you start watching the high level professional matches amongst japanese and korean senseis and sabumneems, there's no longer any real difference, seeing as they often practice with each other anyways.

If you're going to feel like crap learning from a kumdojang instead, then just don't go, but you should probably know what more about what you're judging before you make any final statements.

What? You're innocent? It seems to me you asked a back-handed question and then immediately answered it yourself with some pretty derogatory conjecture. Kumdo/kendo - there's just not enough difference to fret over, unless you're concerned with nationalistic issues that shouldn't affect your training regimen anyway. If they have qualified instructors, you should try it before making a judgement.

Hmmm such a devisive topic

Kumdo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kumdo
Kendo http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kendo

I think it is important to realise that all Kendo isn't the same. You have Dojo that are more sport Oriented, some that are more traditional etc so there is a wide ammount of variation even within Kendo and I would imagine within Kumdo as well. The only way you will ever know is by attending some of the training and watching. After all we are all in Kendo (Kumdo if thats your lean) to get out of it what we want and you need to find a dojo that provides what you want.

People often go on and on about cultural invasion blah blah blah. But. It is a fact of life. In Australia we play Cricket - English but even then maybe earlier somewhere else. Japan - has a lot of Baseball yet that was "introduced" by the ocupational forces at the end of WW2. While political issues surrounding when these things are introduced are tricky and hotly debated there is no need to take that out on people who want to participate in a sport/art. In the end does it really matter where it came from? If it gives you what you want from it who cares? After all, How many of us here are actually say.... Japanese? Should that make a difference? Japanese people study at Kumdo dojo (Or whatever the term is they use - cant remember and too lazy to scroll back :P) and Korean people study at Kendo dojo, leave the politics alone...

Basically, that person that put up that website is obviously a retard.

That is the perfect example of a one-sided, biased, and misleading article written by someone who obviously realy doesn't know anything about kendo or kumdo. If you look at the website its just a Korean hater posting random ish.

Kumdo is great. It has some small difference, and thats fine.

If it comes down to "style" the style doesn't vary anymore than it would from kendo dojo to kendo dojo, from east coast to west coast. All dojos/dojangs are different when it comes to nuances like small subtle habits picked up by students from their sensei.

Its like saying that Basketball around the world is all a copy of American "real" basketball, and that they all suck.

But they do...

Actually at a recent AKR Dinner (At the Australian Championships this year) there was a heated debate on our table about what people wanted from Kendo. For some it was the art, for some the sport, for some the grey area between absolute perfection and respect Vs Anything to score a point

Kinda ruined the night in some ways...

Did you even bother reading that website? or did you come to your conclusions after reading the title? The guy who made that website doesn't study kendo at all! His website is designed to write anti-Korean propaganda. I emailed this guy once. I asked him to give non-Japanese sources to his claims, he replied with "I give enough sources."

Everyone already told you to go try it out before making judgments. I bet you haven't even gone to the dojang to check them out.

try this: you asked an insulting question but answered it yourself by trashing something you have no experience with. understand?

(if not, you really should not be hit over the head anymore with a stick.)

I think that there might have been too much flaming here: from what I read, I think that mancubus73 made a fast google search, found a website, and because he wasn't sure the site was good, asked his question here. The lack of human contact caused by internet, plus a mistake in the way he expressed his question caused the following flaming. And mancubus73 apologized for the offence caused.

The "pilling on the newbies" thread should have been read. I'm not sure this thread give a good image of the kendo/kumdo community.
