Default stupidest observations by people who should know better
What are the stupidest observations about Kendo Iaido and jodo you've heard by people that should know better?

I recently heard an iaido 5th Dan say that Kendo is pointless cos you only hit the targets that have armour on. I also heard a similar grade kendoka criticising iaido because they never have to hit a live moving target.

Ok, I'm not going to go into why these are stupid, it would be stating the bleedin' obvious, but I do have a solution: Anyone that holds these views should go to a special practice where ji Geiko is run for as long as necessary, no armour, and with Shinken.

That should disprove both points.

Good thread! So many to choose from, but the following were from at least sandan level....

......the aikidoka who added to an aiki jo kata by standing on one leg with the jo held vertically "because it looked good"

....or the experienced kendoka who didn't ever want to do iaido because "it looked poncey"

....or a different kendoka who didn't like iaido because he "preferred a real challenge"

....or the iaidoka who thought kendo was pointless because "you don't cut properly"

I've encountered this one a couple of times:

... the kendoka who thinks iaidoka are better at kendo kata because they are "used to doing kata all the time".

we don't all do that!

Plenty of "stupid" observations for those new to aikido... but i prefer to think of them as honest or inexperienced.

In fact, too many to mention!

I would like to know why in iaido forms where you are sitting people are not using a short sword to draw?

I was under the impression that the Japanese use to take off their long swords when sitting down and only should have the short sword at their side.

True (historically), but being made to do kata with a long sword is more difficult, so that's what we practice.

Sorry, ShinKenshi, but I think it will never be forgotten. Not as long as there are ninjers out there...
But you have a special place in our hearts for that thread!

Not really sure I like being remembered for that. Kinda glad I was able to provide you all with extreme amusement at my expense but still quite embarrassing. And to be honest, I'm surprised I'm that infamous. Just please, can we only bring it up in inside jokes from now on? Please?

Scott, maybe next time I'm in the UK you could buy me a beer for my entertainment services .

Very true. Those two should wear signs at all times to warn all unsuspecting newbies. Besides....there can only be one hapless victim of extreme sarcasm!
