Gekkiken can really only be swallowed warm, IMHO, and even then it leaves a bit of ethyl aftertaste. But don't get me wrong, it's a good brand for the price, and if you're a student on a budget it's something to set your standard to.
The best thing about Gekkeikan is that it is available almost anywhere in the U.S. these days.
I mean, I was in some one-horse town in Texas a couple years ago (Sommerset if you must know) and even in the tiny Mom and Pop grocery store they had three dusty bottles on the shelf way in back.

What it was doing way out in the middle of nowhere is beyond me, but hey, Sake is Sake, even old dusty Gekkeikan.

Um....Super-sexy sake with a Full fruity nose?

I think "G" may stand for something else.

Well, looks like the Hipsters are latching on to Sake now.

And I so enjoyed drinking it.
But hey, I had a good run though..

Oh, is it wrong of me to preferr sake chilled & cold?
*puts on flame retardant suit*
Most good, aka modern refined sake is supposed to be served cool or cold. Lower quality sake is warmed to take the edge off the ethyl alcohol taste, but if you heat quality sake you remove or modify the flavor. Not to say you never should, but sometimes people in the know will give you a weird look, like asking for your gazpacho warm.

Thanks for the sake links, they'll take some of the dice rolling out of buying specialty alcohols at the liquor store. Kampai!

Not to swipe this thread, but...

What would be a good first sake to try? Personally, I'm not a regular drinker, but I'd like to try a drink or two now and then...

NigoriZake is the answer to your question.
You live in Hawaii, so I assume it's available at the local 7-11, probably in Slurpee or shave ice form as well.

Admittedly, we're an enigmatic lot,

us manly men we

We drink gasoline
and our napalm is pee.

I sleep in the pine tops
I swing from the leaves
I skin Grizzly bears
and use them as greaves.

Pick my teeth with a poker
red hot from the coals.
I once ate a whole horse,
and two of her foals

I shave with a buzz saw
Brush me teeth with a stick

The ladies all like me
'cause I have a large

..beard.

I'll stare down a tiger
and kick his but too

I crap chunks of guys
more macho than you.

LOL
