Default Need some Sake-advice
I'm thinking of buying a bottle of fine sake to a friend as a gift. He goes to Japan on occasion and he knows good sake from bad sake so I need to find that spcial brand of sake to make it a special gift.
The problem is that I dont drink sake (often) nor do I know good from bad so I need some help picking a good brand.

This list below are the ones I can order in a jiffy. If there is a good brand outside that list I could prolly import it though.

Dewatsuru Junmai Dai Ginjo
Gekkeikan Sake
Hana Hato Kijo Shu
Horin Junmai Daiginjo Ultra Premium Sake
Kariho Junmai Shu
Kikusakari Junmai Ginjo 2006
Kikusakari Kurakagami Tokubestu Dai Ginjo
Koshu Sannen Chozo
Masumi Karakuchi Ki-ippon
Nanbubijin Gin Ginga
Okuden Kanzukuri So any recommendations ladies and pervs?

What you want,
What you need sir,
is a bottle of NigoriZake.

Most Sake snobs disdain it it seems, but trust me, you and your gift recipient will not be displeased.

But, things being what they are,
For premium Sake, Any of these should suffice:

http://www.sake-world.com/html/best-sake-picks.html

I should note that personally, I find something to like about all Sake,
and have never met one I didn't like.

Nectar of the Gods. The Macallan of Sake. Delicious and efficient (at 18%, it ain't near-beer).

Dude you already have a weather that's cold most of the year. I mean you're supposed to long for warm stuff. You have to fight the cold in you, nothing better than hot alcohol.

Flame wish granted.

The Best Sake in the world...

Free Sake,

I think anything given as a gift will be appreciated as such. Looking for good sake is fun though.

Well yes and no...It's just that the (two) brands of sake I've tasted remind me of warm puke. Chilled works great (for me).

Ah..Yeh thats true as well. He would definetely apreciate the gift...though if your friend eats at the finest resturants then buying him a "Happy Meal" still falls a bit short..at least in my mind.

Remember that sake is does not age well.
Depending on how quickly inventory turns over in your neck of the woods, you might want to check the color. (Make sure it's not yellow.)
"Super Premium" sake is great when it's fresh, but since its also expensive it might sit on the shelf a little longer.

And mind you, Fred would know. After all, he's from the country that invented Lutefisk.

BAM!

True,
But one thing I've learned is, never buy wine for another if you yourself are not "into" it, and by "Into" you know...the tasting parties, the fundraisers...the uncaskings...etc..etc..
Besides, if the guy is really your friend, it's the thought that counts, and if he would turn his nose up at any gift from you, then he's probably a bit of a pretentiously snobbish douchebag.
-of course, that's my opinion of most Wine "connoisseurs", not to be confused with those who "just like to drink wine."

~And i will never accept that Sake is just "Rice Wine."

It is nothing less than a magical elixir provided by the Gods for our joyous food debauchery.
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

/Rantus finalum.

Lutfisk..*shudders* I never touch the stuff . You should try another Swedish "delicacy": "Surströmming"
Surströmming ("soured (Baltic) herring") is a northern Swedish delicacy consisting of fermented Baltic herring. . Also something I wont touch with a 4 shaku jo.

Anyhoo, regarding snobbery and sake..I think in this case its me that is the snobb. I wanna find a cool and very special gift which kinda makes the whole "its the thought that counts & its free & its a gift"-idea a bit insufficient .

I would recommend Joe Miller or perhaps Jeff Hughes. I noticed that they weren't on your list.

Oh wait... you said Sake!

My bad.

Gekkiken can really only be swallowed warm, IMHO, and even then it leaves a bit of ethyl aftertaste. But don't get me wrong, it's a good brand for the price, and if you're a student on a budget it's something to set your standard to.

The only other brands available here are Ozeki, which is slightly cheaper but a bit worse, and Fuki, which is a bit more expensive but verrrry smoth and a good amount of flavor (they also make plum wine).
