Default Whale Meat
Ever try it? It is the nastiest thing I have ever tasted. Surely natto is like eating lemonade sparkles by comparison, not that I would try natto either.

I can see why Greenpeace is trying to get the Japanese from fishing for Minke whales. Not to save the whale but to get that shit off the world's butchers' slabs.

I've only had it once, but as far as I can recall it was delicious. Don't know what type of whale it was, though.

Well ... I'd say there's a reason the sashimi form of it is highly regarded. Still, I'd feel pretty guilty about seeking it out nowadays. Some discussion from another forum:

Only tried the dried, salted inuit variety which was, well, dry and salty!.

(You should try natto at least once, btw)

Kujira sashimi/sushi is delicious, Shiokujira (the dried jerky stuff) stuff is revolting...

Haven't tried it in any other ways yet.

I've had sashimi a few times. It was okay; really fatty (marbled). I don't see why the Japanese make such a fuss about it, I'd rather have some chutoro. Try the squid jerkey, now THAT is nasty.

Scott what are you doing straying from land mammals anyway?

i got tricked into eating whale sashimi early on by a kendo sensei. He was all casual like 'do you like fish?' eyeing it skeptically i ax what is it and he goes into high gear like 'eat it eat it eaditeaditeaditeadit' and he waits until i swallow then points at my stomach and yells 'WHALE!'.

my brain made me feel ill but i have to say the taste was nondescript.

Don't worry - am going out for a 16oz fillet steak (medium-rare) tonight to redress the balance.

You lived in Nagasaki but never ate whale? It's all I can do to keep them from forcing it down my throat! A common sight in Nagasaki - it says "We Have Whale," with "Nagasaki, the town of the whale" down the side.

I've been fed it raw, dried, deep fried... (not as jerky though - that sounds bad). Oh, those tasty, tasty whales...

Raw chicken is better though.

Personnaly, I'd try it.

Not a big lover of fish but do like some stuff.

Don't suppose they do it in batter, with some chips and scraps, wrapped in newspaper, smothered in salt and vinegar do they?

No need to worry, then. They're mammals... just like you. Just bigger. Like Scott...

I wouldn't eat the stuff (don't eat mammals anyway)....

Anyhoo, my Japanese teacher said that one of his first business visits over there, the dirty bastards got him and his associates eating whale cum.... which begs the question... how in the shit do they get the stuff???!!! I'm picturing a couple of hefty Japanese dudes really going to town, like grabbing on and going for a bungee run, to give one lucky whale his jollies before they slice him up.

Vera Lynn was always eating it during World War 2.

Apparently she is part Innuit.

I ate it a couple times back in high school. I went to a state boarding school back in Alaska for two years, and some of the other students would get "care packages" from home, one guy would always get some muktuk (whale blubber) and caribou.

Nothing like a chunk of frozen raw whale blubber with a slice of frozen raw caribou wrapped around it. Quite yummy compared to other regional foods, such as fermented salmon eggs or stink head.
