American Football is Rugby for whimps.
I used to watch Wigan Rugby League quite regularly, back when they were the most successful team in Britain, of any sport. I saw Andy Gregory a short squat 38 year old at the time picked up by two St Helens players and literally speared head first into the gound. He got up immediately, completely unfazed. He was recently in the news, now 45, after being attacked by a Rottweiller. He had to punch the dog repeatedly to get it off him.

Rugby League players are real battlers, Shaun Edwards was the youngest player ever for Wigan in the 1990 Challenge Cup final and played on after the first few minutes with multiple fractures of his eye socket and a depressed cheek fracture.

I also used to love seeing Vaiga Tuigamala tackled by three players and still keep moving an extra ten yards with these guys trying to bring him down. They would talk about New Zealand rugby union star Jonah Lomu as being tackled by a bus or a train but Tuigamala it was like being tackled by a bicycle and getting caught up in the chain and wrapped round the gears before being spat out the back.

Dang I miss those glory days when there were some real rugby stars...

hehe ach ya all beat me to it
yes football (where they primarily use feet to move a ball around) is what you lot call soccer

nfl is like rugby (where the ball is generally carried about in ones hands) but with lots of padding and lots of stopping and shouting silly things
and boring in comparison to welsh rugby union

That, and a good spot on the on-ramp can make for a tidy income for the right person.

Apparently David Beckham is pleased with the prospect of living and playing in America, but not so happy at having to learn another language.

yeah, i guess you missed the dripping sarcasm throughout that entire comment. i also guess that the prospect of teenage girls working for lipgloss doesn't bother you in the least.

Maaaaan...250 million?!? In his prime I could understand but now? I suppose it could be used as proof that Americans have more money than sense.

TBH I don't blame him for taking the opportunity. $250 for doing what he loves to do - all credit to him.

What do the Americans get for their money - well, I guess they're hoping that they will get someone who at long last will put Football ( the real one) up on a similar footing to Basketball, Baseball and American Rules Football ( to give it it's proper title).

I have never ever understood why he generates so much animosity from some quarters - what has he actually done that is so bad. Called for Jihad, executed thousands, abused children? No, all he does is play football very well - and by and large does it without snarling and abusing referees. Perhaps those that enjoy abusing him are envious of the fact that he has so much more than they do.

Same with Victoria. All she ever did was sing in a fairly succesful pop group and she has been maligned ever since. Her voice is decent without being fantastic...so what? have you ever listened to most pop singers - few of them are much better. And don't give me lists of who You think is better because that would be down to personal taste. And she is supposed to be a bit of a crank? Says who? The newspapers thats who. Oh well, it must be true if it is in the gossip columns of some downmarket rag.

And even if some of the stuff they have done seems a bit weird - I give you the modern-day clarion call.....So what?

Lets leave them alone FFsake. They have done nothing wrong.

Lee

Oh and TBH I always though Posh was the sexiest of the Spice Girls ....especially in that black PVC dress with the high heel boots oooh I'm off for a cold shower now

It'll be tough...mainly because of lack of advertizing slots. American Football, Basketball have enough breaks in the quarters and time outs to pour in the advertising...and baseball has lots of changeovers etc for the same.

Its probably because of the hype built around him what with the fashion shoots etc...to some it would seem he's more interested in being a star than a footballer...oh, well.

I don't want to accuse all English people of acting rude or snotty toward Americans because some are very pleasant, but after seven weeks I've come to the conclusion that sometime in grade school English children are taught to equate 'stupid' with 'American.' Yes, we are arguably louder and more demanding, but that doesn't mean we're all ignorant. Interestingly enough, British radios blare American pop music, televisions broadcast American t.v. shows and the movies play American flicks. If we're so dumb, why do you cherish our popular culture? And one last thing: any country that manufactures the Spice Girls shouldn't throw stones at glass houses ...

Unfortunately there are stereotypes everywhere, so you are not alone. I have been studying and living abroad for many years I have suffered them again and again.

Every time I see a documentary/T.V. program about anything to do with Spain I brace myself to the usual flurry of statements such as "The spanish contractors/hotel staff/etc have a relaxed approach to deadlines, is not in their their culture, bla bla...",

This is absolute and utter b*ll, are builders, electricians, etc, any more realiable in the UK, France, or any other country?, well, my expereince tells me otherwise (and I don't mean to offend anyone).

On the other hand you are better off resigning yourself and having a sense of humour about it, if you use it to your advantage it can be very entertaining

Now, after that outburst I'll just get on my donkey to sing some flamenco while I finish my tapas

Well, after giving the world The Beatles, Led Zepplin, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Who, Hendrix(yes, he's an Ami but the Brits made him famous), Depeche Mode, Bowie, etc etc...I think we can forgive them for the Spice Girls.

Nevah!
~and now they've managed to have the Grand Sexual of all things Metro foisted upon us as well!
And skin creams in Los Angeles will never be the same again.
..Oh well, I guess all things considered, adding the Golden Pansy to our ever-present phony collective does seem appropriate somehow.
LOL

Kenzan,

wasn't being snotty, just making a silly joke, shame you missed it. Apologies, if my irreverence offended you etc etc.

TBH - I tell you what I want, what I really really want ( and I know you know the tune) is to say that the Spice Girls, despite not being my taste, wrote fair enough pop songs.

We watch American films simply because they are enjoyable (although seldom accurate to be fair) and the only other place they are made is India - and they tend to be subtitled.

Who said you are ignorant? Your President ain't bright but anyone who has read anything by me knows I don't have much time for our politicians either.

Uk radios don't blare American music - they blare anything they think will sell - American, African, Caribbean, S. American, - all styles from jazz to punk, from Reggae to Classical.

And if we are really talking about glass houses ( and I'll try to ignore the misphrased metaphore), any country that produces Country & Western should not criticise anybody else about anything
