Hi
I have a question for the wood experts out there. I bought a Jo staff from a martial arts supplier that said it was Japanese White Oak but the item I received was slightly longer and I think that I may have been sent the wrong item. My question then is how do I know if my Jo is actually Japanese White Oak? I ask because I also have a white Oak bokken that looks very differant to my new Jo. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Hi 2. Shirogashi (or shiro kashi), Japanese white oak, is light colored, finely and evenly grained, and moderately dense. One should not be able to see large vessels or conspicuous growth rings (shirogashi is an evergreen oak, diffuse porous). 3. Your jo will have some tendency to look a little different, because you have one aspect of the wood of the bokuto which is not much exposed (on the ha and mune). The jo exposes all sides of the wood evenly. Keep that in mind when you are comparing. 4. You could try posting a close up picture taken with the macro setting on the camera. Hope this helps. -Beth |

Thanks for the replies. I found out why the Jo seemed so long; It seems the supplier sells 5ft Jo whereas the stores I bought my others from sells mainly 4ft jo.
I didn't pay much for it (30 or 35 AUD I think) and It's not super important that it's Japanese White Oak but if a store says they sell Japanese White Oak Jo then they ought to be Japanese White Oak Jo, besides that I thought that it might help in determining whether I've got the right Product or not. The only Camera I have is on my DSi XL so I took the best photos I could with that and have added them to a gallery on an old website I hardly ever use because I couldn't figure out how to put them up any other way: http://kapowcartoonsillustration.web...lbumid=9145861 |
