Default Where are you?
I thought it'd be interesting to see where people come from and where people are practicing right now.

Oh and sorry if I missed your country or area. I put down everything I could think of from what I remember of people's profiles.

Lies, smoke and mirrors, there is nothing in the middle of the US. Its all dessert and zombies, dont let those coast elitists know you can buy an entire mcmansion housing development for what they pay in rent for one year.

Apparently other countries aren't significant enough to subdivide or even warrant a mention, despite the fact that nearly all the people responsible for providing this very service are from countries not mentioned in the list.

Yeah they are, it's in "Other". Reminds me of the struggle with the people from Latin America who insisted that they're from America. (Which technically they are)

If you were going to do a survey you would think each country major federation would be included, I mean china and russia are pretty big, why didnt they get subdivided, and the land down under is an entire continent, all the other continents got their own division. And Hawaii, I mean they have their own governing body for kendo, last time i checked there kendo was bigger there than in the rest of the USA put together..... And then you have the UK, i'm sure they dont appreciate being lumped in with the tossers in the rest of europe, I mean come on, your euros are no good here.

It's hard to understand why one would ask a two part question to a one-dimensional poll. Apparently, people don't move?

I was curious so I searched the user database. This list is for active users, which I defined as at least 5 posts and having some sort of activity since the beginning of April. This is based on what they reported for country flag in their profile, which may or may not be accurate (Christmas Island? Really?). Anyways, hope it answers your question MAG. We're a diverse bunch. The US is not the world, not even Kendo World.

Neal, I am surprised that the list you posted is so heavily weighted in the US actually.

Indeed. We're not the world, but we do appear to be 60% of Kendo World...

As for leaving out the home country of the Spaminator of all people...ouch!

It's not unusual in any english-language forum. There are other nations that are punching above their weight class here. Australia has 28 representatives which is about 16% of the US count, with a population that's only 5% of the USA's if memory serves.

About 38%, actually.

I knew this was gonna be good the minute I clicked...

This very topic is proof to the fact that internet activity does not equal Kendo activity (it's an inverse proportion, sometimes!)

[tease] I guess the US just have the largest number of people with too much time in their hands, or wanting to avoid working [/tease]

Also: just me!! yay?

Yep. And I'm for that 100%.

I often wonder what the real meaning of polls are. For example, does this poll represent where the fine folks of kendo-world are from, or does it measure the willingness of different folks from different regions to participate in a poll?

I figure most polls in the U.S. of A. generally represent a particular demographics willingness to lie...

I've heard that Canada and the US Midwest have a few kendoka here and there...
I was going to put the U.S.-Midwest there. However, there were only 10 possible options (max) that I could put in the poll. I thought if I put down the midwest, it'd be even worse (as far as subdividing the U.S.) I thought I should try to put down at least one other area of the globe.

I forgot about Canada.
pffft. I guess I really am a typical American. :\
Sorry Canada!

Apparently other countries aren't significant enough to subdivide or even warrant a mention, despite the fact that nearly all the people responsible for providing this very service are from countries not mentioned in the list.
Yeah. I tried to group as many as possible, (with the exception of the U.S. and Europe I guess) because I only had ten options available. I also figured that, since this is an English speaking forum, most likely there would be people from English speaking nations (with some bilingual people here and there.) Europe got subdivided because sooooo many people there are multi-lingual. (at least in my experience).

I wanted to add Australia/New Zealand/Phillipines area, but then I'd have to take out one of the other continents.

I wanted to add Russia but, I didn't remember seeing a single user from Russia on here.

I should have added China.

Hmmm, maybe it would have been better if I had just done it by continents/areas, rather than countries. Again I only had ten possible poll options to work with.

Yeah that would have been a better idea. Are the total number of federations under 10??

It's hard to understand why one would ask a two part question to a one-dimensional poll. Apparently, people don't move?
Of course people move! I'm very nomadic myself- or at least I'd like to be. I was basically asking "Where are you from RIGHT NOW?" But "where are you from right now" sounded a bit lame. So I added the second question on in the post, in an attempt to clarify. Apparently it failed.

It's not unusual in any english-language forum. There are other nations that are punching above their weight class here. Australia has 28 representatives which is about 16% of the US count, with a population that's only 5% of the USA's if memory serves.
About 38%, actually.
I should have put Australia. It was either Australia/New Zealand/Philippines area or Africa. I felt bad about leaving Africa out.

I knew this was gonna be good the minute I clicked...

Yeah, quite obviously. 90% of my dojo never looks at KW (I think). Unless they are lurking as guests.

I also think that, it's certain...*ahem* people that tend to be louder...or more expressive...than others. Which I don't think is a bad thing!

Doh! This is why I suck at math; I always forget that one crucial step. Well, I did figure out that the U.S. number is more than half of all the other countries combined. One wonders about the Japan score, though. IIRC, most of the Japan flag users hail from somewhere else. OTOH, if MAG's question is where people are right now, Japan might be underrepresented. I'm in Japan, and my flag is the U.S. You know there may be others, as Emmet Otter's Jug Band once said.

Yeah, quite obviously. 90% of my dojo never looks at KW (I think). Unless they are lurking as guests. Pretty good chance of the latter, actually.

"Midwest" is a lie... it's located back east.

When I went to college at Northern Arizona University, I took a linguistics class taught by a woman from Chicago. She said she, as a Midwesterner, was surprised when she heard from Arizonans that she was from "Back East," so one day in class she asked us where "Back East" started. The average answer was "The New Mexico border."

Pretty good chance of the latter, actually.
Then I'm doomed. One of my dojo mates figured out who I was immediately, when he said he wanted to look up something here..(as a guest since I know he doesn't post here). I guess I am the nail that sticks up at the dojo too. >.< nooo!
Anyway, if I want to live in Japan, how is that going to work...? I sorta stick out a lot even among Americans. ( It's not on purpose! It just happens!)
