I am not a doctor.. But try Vitamin D 5000. Take one a day. Try it for a month and see if that will help you at all. I know you can get away with having an intake of 2000-3000 IU a day-that's getting it from food plus a supplement and the sun(15 min. of sun exposure will give you 400 IU of vit. D.), but I wouldn't take more than that without consulting a doctor first. Vitamin D is good for you because it's what helps calcium absorb into your bones. Without vitamin D, calcium is worthless for the bones, because the bones can't absorb it without Vit. D. And, if you don't get enough Vit. D, even if you get enough calcium, you will just end up losing bone density and end up with osteoporosis. That means you can break a bone easily. Osteoporosis isn't an old person's disease like most think it is. Anyone can get it, even kids. But, TOO much vit. D can be bad. There's also a growing body of knowledge that indicates that the current RDA for vitamin D is much too low, and that vitamin D plays a much larger part in maintaining proper health than was previously believed. However, the part about consulting your doctor before doing anything is spot on! ![]() |

yea bottom line too much is poisonous, and its very easy to overdose if taking OTC supplements. Like most medication, cholecalciferol is certainly toxic in excess, and, like Coumadin, is used as a rodent poison for this purpose. Animal data indicates signs of toxicity can occur with ingestion of 0.5 mg/kg (20,000 IU/kg ), while the oral LD50 (the dose it takes to kill half the animals) for cholecalciferol in dogs is about 88 mg/kg, or 3,520,000 IU/kg. An Overview of Cholecalciferol Toxicosis. The American Board of Veterinary Toxicology (ABVT). This would be equivalent to a 110-pound adult taking 176,000,000 IU or 440,000 of the 400 unit cholecalciferol capsules. I suspect the main reasons for the toxicity fears with certain vitamins is primarily because they (vitamins A, D, E and K) are fat soluble so they get stored in the body's fat cells and used as needed rather than flushed out like the B and C vitamins are. This means it's easier to build up unnecessarily high levels of those vitamins in the body. However, I don't see any reasonably sane individual consuming 400,000 vitamin pills in a short time period. |

This is what I heard from my doctor too... But I just don't want to become another MJ doctor.. So, yes, you should consult with your doctor first before you even listen to any of people at KW.

This Vitamin D thing lately has gotten bizarrely political. It makes me wonder if there is some sort of shadow war going on between vitamin suppliers. It's in my multi so I take it but nothing I've noticed so far in life is nearly as helpful to warding off sickness as getting good old fashioned plain'old sleep.

I wonder how helpful vitamins are also. I take a multi because I don't make the effort to have a well balanced diet. However, I notice that if I'm feeling like something's like a cold might be coming on, the best thing I can do is eliminate caffeine from my diet for a few days. If I do that, then either I don't get sick or if I do, the cold doesn't last long. Extra vitamins and fruits haven't been as helpful as that to me.
Overexercise, lack of sleep and bad diet all adversely affect your immune system probably more than any vitamin pill will benefit so I would look at those factors. I haven't read the whole thread but if you haven't gone in for a physical, that would really be the place to start. |

You may like to talk to your doctor about nasal rinsing - basically washing the insides of your nose with saline solution. Neilmed makes a good kit. I use this every day for my chronic nasal issues. You could try using it straight after kendo practice for a few months and see if that helps with the colds. My theory is that after kendo practice, your immune system might be lowered and whatever is getting inside your nose is causing you problems. Also, please practice proper hygiene as has been mentioned in previous posts. Wash your hands with soap before touching your nose or eyes and try not wiping your nose with your tenugui if at all possible - use clean tissues instead. Again, please discuss these ideas with your doctor.

Try looking at how many people practice in your dojo and the different areas they are from. Also where you work. I have had the same problem most of my life, I'm relatively healthy but do suffer a lot of colds. When I asked my doctor why this was he reckoned it was due to the fact I worked in a customer facing job.
The fact that I was dealing with so many people from so many locations just meant an increased exposure to cold and flu bugs. It stands to reason that our immune systems aren't always going to be tip top and the more people you come in to close contact with the more chance you have of picking something up. Offices are notorious due to air con units recycling germs. The fact you are in a dojo with potentially 20 other bellowing kendoka releasing a potential 20 different cold germs in to your face during kiri-kaeshi may be one answer. I don't think it's kendo or anorexia? (I have experience of both) K |
