Default Spams
I feel ashamed, yet I will tell you the story...

As I came to get my daily fix of KWF, I saw the two first categories polluated with a spam, author: Rollsroy. By the time I read a couple of threads, the spam was spreading to the third category and as I write I fear the damages might have grown even more. However, I didn't stay put, I reacted as a (sain) martial artist would do, I grabbed my bokken and went on the fight of the century, the true quest of a true warrior, and I started to bash the crap out of my work computer, yelling all out 'You shall not SPAM' and as my hair started to rise due to electricity shock and I was about to pass out, I whispered to my co-workers 'Run you fools'.

I'm afraid to report, fellow warriors.... I failed.

Again, I feel ashamed that I couldn't stop the plague of spams while I was witnessing it. I have failed you all, therefore I should bow and leave, find a quiet place and comit seppuku.

Tell the moderators that I tried, I did...

I don't think so -- the book captcha I suggested is pretty easy for people to read and has been relatively successful in other places. Plus, it helps scan books.

I still see the spam. Capcha is not the way to go at all. They are technological dinosaurs, and will be gone in the next few years. The forum needs a few more moderators. There are enough people here daily who would be happy to take on a bit more responsibility, making the browsing experience more pleasant for the rest of us.

Exactly how fast do you need your spam caught, anyways? I guess it's not acceptable that there's a 14 hour or so gap in the day where it's not caught immediately?

I personally can live with the concept that Mr. Gendzwill need not babysit this place 24/7.

Wait till you get to work, like I do.

No, but my point was that having 1 or 2 more would do a lot to eliminate the 14 hour gap in policing the forum.

Spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, beans, and spam.

S'OK Aurelien, we appreciate the heart-felt effort on our behalf!

Personally, I feel that Mr. Gendzwill does an outstanding job policing the forum.

oh..........

I feel ashamed......

I never meant to put the great spaminator in doubt with this message, I was just very bored at work and was in a 'prosing' mood.

Neil, I love what you do, I'm a great fan of spam head cutters, we should actually open a facebook fan page for the spaminator, alongside with the 'we hate Gibbo' fan page, or maybe haters page was it?

Last spam attack that I remember was all over the forum, this one seems to have stopped at the 3 first threads... nice!

Please don't take this seriously, too many moderators kill the moderator!

I was hoping that more people pick up on the 'Lord of the Rings' hints...

I feel ashamed that I ignited the doubt in the OH SO GREAT Spaminator, therefore I should bow and leave, find a quiet place and comit seppuku.

Again....

I was hoping that more people pick up on the 'Lord of the Rings' hints... Much too subtle for this lot!

Make sure you have a good kaishaku so they don't make a right hash out of your seppuku like the last guy that did it.

Rather than getting more people to kill spam, it seems like it would be more efficient to keep the spammers from signing up to begin with.

We do that, and originally we used an image-based captcha kind of thing, but the bots were starting to get through that pretty easily. I switched it to a simple knowledge-based question and that reduced the bots considerably. We get one or two a week now it seems, as opposed to multiple bots daily like we used to have. If we didn't use anything, we'd be flooded and then manual spam removal would be very onerous.

ETA I've updated the question as we do seem to be getting more bots lately. Maybe the word's getting around.

The admin of our forum was saying that the success of the Captcha has something to do with if it's text based or pictue based...I could ask him.
