No Shinken injuries in Kata. I did give myself 3 stitches on my right index finger by doing a terrible job of cleaning it AND talking at the same time:

Blood? Where? A did gouge my left index finger badly with my iaito once - infinitely more painful than a shinken cut

Well, seeing as anything's allowed including bludgeoning...

Once I made the mistake of showing a friend how to hold a golf-club at a driving range. (Mind you, t'was my first time too, but y'had to admit that the way she was holding it was definately incorrect).

I stepped back, but apparently not far enough. On her backswing, I got a metal golfclub smashing into my chin. Ugh.... D:

Ouch, and I thought drilling through my hand was silly....

I have a nice scar now, Paikea, no ring tho. The fingernail grew back despite everything.

Just curious, will such a self inflicted, but still accidental happening be seen as a negative during shinsa? The reigi aspect..
If they see you, you've failed - accident or not. It shows a serious lack of control of the sword. How can you show how badass you are when you cut yourself and not the other guy?

it was only my hakama!
Brings to mind a comment I heard by Lenny Henry

" I bought myself a big new BMW and beat it up with lots of dents to show I don't mess about on the road"

Hehe I was talking generally about accidents during shinza/shiai - not aimed at you! I couldn't even draw my sword to cut the other guy without cutting myself!

A single drop of blood = fail!

Also - as i understand it - if the Tachi Ai ['floor captain'] spots such an occurrence then Tachi Ai is expected to call 'Yame' and remove miscreant from the floor.

Obviously this makes sense if it is a serious 'bite' - but I have heard of this occuring when a poor noto/kissaki 'kiss' created a drop of blood on the poor Iaidoka's left hand.

More knowledgeable/experienced people please correct me if I am wrong.

'Prick me, - do I not bleed?' [The Bard]
"If you prick us, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? AND IF YOU WRONG US, SHALL WE NOT REVENGE?"

Coolest Willy Shakespeare quote ever.

Which reminds me: I've been so out of trek with Star Trek in so many years.

Wish I had time to catch up with it!
