Most memorable H & A game
 

With the hundreds if not thousands of games we have all seen over the years, it would be great to see who rates their best & most memorable "Home and Away" game EVER.... Not a final or Grand Final, just your most memorable standard H & A game that you have always remembered.

I gotta say there are too many, but one that always stuck in my head was when I was a young bloke back in 1982. As a tragic Royals kid I would bleed when the Royals lost. I recover much better now but back then it was tough.... It was a wet day and EP had to travel to Claremont Oval to play the Tigers, who were at the time a very powerful side that didnt lose at Claremont Oval very often. In fact the previous year (1981) the tigers dished out some brutal thrashing to many sides. Almost to the point of total humiliation. It was with this in mind we dragged our feet to Claremont Oval not expecting much joy for the day. But we went as usual anyway.

The game was fairly close for the best part of the day, mainly due to the fact that Claremont had an off day in front of the goals. But the general feeling was that as soon as the Tigers found their radar, our boys would get swallowed up. At 3/4 time the Royals found themselves 8 points behind (8.18 to 9.4). Claremont had the breeze and the rain continued to fall. Towards the end of the game EP trailed by less that a kick. Until at about the 25 minute mark Claremonts Peter Jaimeson (ex-Royal himself) kicked a miracle goal from the boundary right in front of the Claremont members area. This put the tigers 9 points up with a few minutes to go and it seemingly ended any hope EP had. As the ball went back to the centre the Royals pushed the ball forward and space opened up for Peter Spencer. He swooped on a ball at half forward and nailed a goal. We were back to within 3 points. The clock was ticking and the siren was ready to go any second. As the ball was bounced back in the middle, the Royals got the pill forward and amazingly John Ironmonger grabbed it and found himself running towards the goal and about 40 metres out. He sunk his size 14's into the ball and it sailed through post height..... The boys had hit the front and us kids were jumping around like mad anticipating one massive upset. As the rain continued the Royals pounced and scratched their way until that loud siren blew to the roar of us stoked EP fans. We had just pulled off a miracle win against all odd (14.6 to 11.21) and thankful the star studded tigers had an off day in front of the sticks. We couldnt have cared less !! It was a very memorable day and a game I personally have never forgotten. To go from expecting a thrashing - to one of the most fighting victories I can remember (after-1978).

Good post, I can't remember that particular game but can remember a similar situation with John Burns.
Burns bursted out of the centre had a couple of bounces and nailed a goal that put East Perth in front just as the siren sounded, it was on ABC TV and was in the days when WAFL ruled.

Claremont and Swans Grand Final 2010. The best Grand Final I have seen in years!

A few come to mind the 1996 GF win over EP by 2pts - but you did say H and A game so for me it would be 1981. Marlboro had offered $20,000 to any WAFL side if they could win 12 in a row. We had won 11 and had Swans at home for the last game of the H and A season. Similar to last year Swans and Claremont had been the form sides and all the games had been close. The oval was packed, some 18,000 hard to believe now but a few times in that era the crowd hit 15-18,000.

The tigers were off. Phil Krakouer was knocked out and was coughing up blood. Jimmy was frantic and noticeably upset. He went quiet. Last quarter, Swans in front late in the game by around 15pts until one J Krakouer came to life including a match winning snap around his body to the railway end to put us in front.

I will never forget looking over to the members wing and seeing every single Claremont fan jumping for joy. Siren went we won by a small margin and collected $20,000 which was massive back in 81. We went on to win the GF against Souths. Definitely the best year for the club IMO. Ralphy kicked over 100, Malaxos kicked 80 odd as did Brett Farmer, the Krakouer bros, Shorty Daniels, Wayne Blackwell - what a side!

Yep have to agree Tigerland, i was at that 81 GF and cheering for the Tigers that day and i had a ringside seat to the all in after the first bounce. Other names that were pure A graders were Lyndsay Kanther, Panniza and Doc Aitken and didn't you have a nippy little curly haired Queenslander named Shaw in the midfield? When Brownie turned up to coach Perth he dragged about 4, make that 5 Claremont players with him, the Farmer boys and Kanther, Daniels and Mark Watson who went on to win a Sandover with us. Unluckily for us Lyndsay Kanther did a knee in a pre season game i think or might have been first or second game and never came back. I rated him very highly.

I remember Ralph, Malaxos and Brett Farmer were dubbed "The Golden Triangle". Dark days as a Perth supporter but i certainly appreciated how good sides like Claremont, SD and SF were back then.

I wasnt aware so many tigers went across to Perth. I knew Watto did but did Shorty Daniels do the same? cant remember that and Kanther?? yeah classic fight in the 81 GF Bazz Campbell ran through big Bazza Beecroft. He still comes to games, I was talking to him on the phone just the other day as this year is the 30 year anniversary of that game. Great tactic by Browny which almost paid off. Yes "Rughead" Shaw great little player made the WA state side. Next time you go to the main bar at Claremont check out the 81 poster and I noticed yesterday there is a pic of one Colin Barnett! in the 68 Colts side!

Also spoke to Doc Aitken who is a CFC member and attends game and his son is an upcoming future star!

Still some kind of record I think?? Over 110,000 attended the home games that year at Claremont Oval - ahhh what I would give for the WAFL to return to those days!

Yep, and former assistant to Graham Moss, Murray Ward came across too who might have had a big influence on those Claremont boys coming over. And another former Tiger, Peter O'Connell played for Perth just prior to Brownie's term there and played some very good football for us on a wing and one day had the better of Phil Narkle out at Bazzo. Shorty Daniels played some very good footy for us too before he succumbed to injuries.

Played in the same side as Graham Moss! colts side of 68'. Its scary actually he looks EXACTLY the same! Murray Ward still goes to games, wonder what ever happened to Shorty, probably went back south.

Hey Fitzy... you must have an EP home & away game that has stuck in your mind after all these years. Any you can post on here ?

Foundation day derby between WP and EP in 2003. EP were on top of the ladder and favourites going into the game. It was close all day and the ground was packed with supporters - WP ended up winning narrowly with Troy Longmuir putting on a show.

I tried to post late last night, Gas, but the message disappeared into cyberspace. Here goes again. I lived in CanOfBeerAh and was brewing beer in Saudi Arabia for most of the 80s and 90s and have worked on Saturdays since my return to Perth, so my most memorable East Perth home-and-away games relate to the 70s.
Rounds 15-21, 1978, stand out as the Mighty Royals were sitting sixth, three games out of the four with seven to play. Specifically, Rounds 19 (Perth), 20 (South Fremantle) and 21 (West Perth) were the best IMHO.
Out of respect for DemonsDen, I won't dwell on Alex Hamilton (from memory, he was DD's phys-ed teacher) kicking the winning goal in the last four seconds at Lathlain Park after Perth had come from the clouds to hit the front; we came from 26 points down at half-time to beat the Mal Brown-coached Bulldogs by two points at Perth Oval the following week; and before 24,500 people or thereabouts at Leederville we defeated the old enemy by nine points to jump from fifth to second.
Despite a hiccup against the Demons in the second semi-final, the rest, as they say, is history. 1978 was my favourite WAFL year, and the icing on the cake was Fitzroy winning the VFL night series premiership in the great Bernie Quinlan's first year at the club.

Those last 7 rounds of the 78 season were remarkable....Even the Subi game where EP won by 63 points, the score were level at 3/4 time !!

1979 at Basso against our arch rivals the cardies; swans kicked a goal after the siren that was disallowed and WP won. even though i was young at the time i remember it like it was yesterday standing behind the goals completely devasted by what had happened even today i would swear black & blue that we had won; me old man had to explian it to me & what had happened later and what made it worse was a mate who happened to be a cardies supporter came to the game with us on this day.

shoulda made him walk! but that was the good old days in the WAFL when nearly everyone went to the footy on saturday afternoon and the shops where shut i don't know how we survived!

And no mobile phones... I dunno how anyone could drive without them back then !!
