I hope the collection will be satisfactory . The drama between Kushboo - Thangar, Ilayaraja rejection has advertised a lot and Periyar himself a very unique person who has a mixed opinion in Tamizhnadu unlike Bharathi or Kamarajar. Periyar - Anti Periyar crowd will watch this movie more seriously. Lets hope for the best, the crew looks good. They have used Raghasiya, I dont think the dance will be as we expect rather something like 'Naan Sirithaal Deepavali' type.

Grouch0,
Good Thread! It was NT's dream to act in Periyar's character, unfortunately it didn't turn up! But sathyaraj is a good choice as well ,not only because sathyaraj's face is suitable for different getups, but also sathyaraj himself a periyarist. Sad..you havn't seen Bharathi..I understand your diapleasure in some non-tamilian acting as a greatest tamil poet of our times..But beleive me ,Shinde did a wonderful Job and Ilayaraj ,as usual brought soul to bharathi's lines ,just 'Nirapathuve nadapathuve' song is enough to feel that. I too have a lot of expectation on this movie 'Periyar' .It is needed to have this movie to educate current generation about Periyar ,probably the most misunderstood leader. |

This is a second thread I've started.
I am really excited of this project. No, its not because of Periyar. I am reserving my judgement until I see the film. I have not seen the director's earlier effort, Barathi, simply because not only he got a non-Tamilian, but he got someone who can't even speak Tamil, with dubbed voice. To my mind, SV Suppiah will always be Barathi. But hopefully in future, there will be a more definite film with proper cast. I am excited about Periyar because of Sathyaraj. After making crappy (some very delightful) films, he is finally given an opportunity to flex his acting muscle. I think criticism will come from the fact that he looks different from Periyar. I recall pictures of Periyar looking much darker (a wonderful contrast to his white hair and beard), and smaller. Sathyaraj's well built 6' 2" is wrong. But, I think he will pull it off. He showed brilliant performances in the past (a long list of achievement in Tamil films). Of recent, I particularly liked his performance in Maran. Very restrained. Very professional. I hope he will do the same. Hope you can show your views. Here are some of the stills (check out one shirtless scene, he shaved off that wools of his): http://www.indiaglitz.com/channels/t...es/1/8737.html Oh yes, I am a Sathyaraj fan. A guilty pleasure. |

True, NT always wanted to play Periyar - the very man who gave him Sivaji title.
I am never a fan of actor/resses with borrowed voice. So, I stayed away from Barathi. Yes, the songs were good. I hope that the director will give a balanced view of Periyar, the good and the bad. The thing that Sathyaraj is a periyar follow worries me, as he may want to mostly defend Periyar. I think as a neutral actor, he should be able to make Periyar as human as possible. But the best part is, most audience don't have much expectation from Sathyaraj. General audience have very short memory, so mostly they would have forgotten Sathyaraj's earlier better effort. So, it would be a pleasant surprise for the general audience to see a good performance. |

Gnana Rajasekaran's Barathi proved that he is not one of those guys who believes a series of historical events does not make a biopic. It is usually common to depict Barathi as the crazy, nationalist and leave it at that. But he had gone deeper and brought out the arrogant aesthete in Bharathi beautifully. So I am sure his Periyar is likely to be an interesting watch.
If I remember right Gnana Rajasekaran also made a documentary about the incident of a Dalit boy being beaten up by his teacher for drinking from the wrong pot. But that is no reason to suspect that he may be uncritical of Periyar. As Joe correctly points out,it is the source of funding that nails any hope of neutrality. I am never a fan of actor/resses with borrowed voice. So, I stayed away from Barathi. Un jaatheekki prathinithi ya vanthrukke. Ille ? Actually I liked Barathi even more because I was amazed how Shinde pulled it off without knowing Tamil. Rajeev (who dubbed for him) got the richly deserved State Award for Best Dubbing artiste that year. |

I'm quoting this here from another thread since it's relevent here...
The movie is supposed to depict both the sides of periyar. It is a known fact that he used to be a person who got addicted to some bad habits which is too personal ! Considering that, I would say it is fair and wont be something that comes out of the blue in the film ! If it does, movie will get a beating ![]() I am expecting something like "BHarathi" out of this movie (without any commercial items). Let me see ! Well, let's hope they show who he really was, as opposed to one "sided idop" worship propaganda. ![]() |

I hope that the end result is a slick, well produced movie (as opposed to tacky and ramshackle). The look and feel of the whole film will always play a vital role in any historical film.
I must say Barathi was a pleasant film to watch, but watching Sayaji Shinde play Barathi didn't sit comfortably with me. It comes down to familiarity with the language. I have no qualms about a non Tamil actor playing a character like Barathi (although i would prefer a Tamil one), but it was pretty obvious that Shinde wasn’t familiar with Tamil. And will Periyar burst into song? I hazard to think..... PS. As Joe said, Nadigar Thilagam showed interest in playing Periyar, but the project with Kalaignar didn't eventuate. |

To be frank ,It is impossible .As this movie is funded (9 million Rs) by Tamil nadu Govt ,I expect a movie only to glorify Periyar .It is not a movie taken by a group without any political backup .But it has a strong influence from Periyar activists and movement and more important Tamil nadu cheif minister kalainjar ,who is a Periyar seedar. So unfortunately ,You can't expect a movie which deals with both sides of periyar. I am a fan of Sathyaraj, and the man, having had done too many films, sometimes look as if he had ran out of tricks in his bag. I hope that he can come out fresh in this movie. Being fresh is very tricky for someone who is 52 years old! All in all, I know the film will be treated with respect. Hey, getting fund from goverment do give you a bit of a status. |

knowing well that he followed Anna when Anna left DMK (and pointed out some unfavourable incidents as a reason for leaving)? But when Anna &co left Periyar and started the party DMK ,they reserved the president seat of the party for periyar and until periyar's death it was unoccupied(Anna was general seceratary of the party) .Even when Periyar teamed up with kamarajar and campaign against DMK ,DMK and Anna never utter a word against periyar .When DMK came to power for the first time ,Anna met Periyar and dedicated their victory to periyar..So all along Anna, kalainjar ,MGR always treated periyar as their leader. Moreover Kalainjar was very close with periyar ,stayed with him and worked in periyar journal 'Viduthalai'.For kalainjar Periyar is always the 'Thalaivar' for him and Anna is always his 'Vazhi Kaati' |

Thanks Joe, I recall reading them in NTs thread.
So, the only bone Anna had to pick was that DK was not political and he had political ambition (where is Murali sar when you need him). Wonder who is playing Anna (has to be key figure in the movie). I think they got Ghandi there. There will be a lot of political/historical figures there...meaning a more identifiable ones as this history is slightly closer to us than Barathi's voice. Prabhuram, I didn't know that there is an award for Dubbing artist. The good side is, they richly deserve it, especially the ladies. The bad side, it will give rise to more mannequins without own voice. |

On what grounds, the govt is funding this movie ?
![]() Its well known that EV Ramasamy Periyar was dead against one particular caste & also against Hindus & their practices ( while he never dared to question other religions ![]() I suspect a venemous intention from the present govt So, u can never expect a NEUTRAL movie here . Even if the director wishes, he will be edited by the bigwigs ![]() Soon one can expect a movie on Anna also ![]() |

Its well known that EV Ramasamy Periyar was dead against one particular caste & also against Hindus & their practices ( while he never dared to question other religions But as given by Nakeeran, not only periyaar, others also do the same i.e., not questioning other religions. Because they won't get "sirupaanmai inathin vaakugal" if they do so. Arasilyalla idhellaam saatharnamappa. ![]() vote poduravanellaam ilichavaayanappaa.... ennaiyum serthudhaan ![]() |
