good thread - i wanted to start it for a long time....we can start a poll for greatest dialogue writers too...

my candidates:
maniratnam (short circuiting long sequences style)
k.bagayraj (for tangential yet hard-hitting style)
sujata (because he is sujata)

Dialogue

After watching Yes, Minister last night, I was trying to think of movies that are great because of their dialogue.

There are movies famous for their speeches, like Parashakthi or Kattabomman, but that's not quite the same thing.

There are movies which are famous for their jokes. Something like Thai Maman has similar ambitions to Yes, Minister, but the execution is not nearly anywhere as good.

The last time I rewound to listen to dialogue again, it was a comedy track with MS Bhaskar as a poetry-quoting bachelor. (How often does anyone not Bharatiar get quoted?)

saamy---hari's powerful dialouges....i liked in that film

TorryJens 03-29-2010 04:22 AM

I meant to mention Crazy Mohan myself -- funny but narrow in range.

What powerful dialogues did Saamy have? It's been a while since I saw it but I remember it as a long advertisement for Vikram's physique rather than a movie notable for dialogue.

Visu in his self-directed films, the early days, when not self indulgent.

Also, Visu the scriptwriter for Tillu Mullu, Netrikann, Mr. Bharath & Nallavanukku Nallavan.

HedgeYourBets 03-30-2010 12:50 AM

manivannan ..... he needs to be credited in this thread

LottiFurmann 03-30-2010 10:05 AM

Did Manivannan write Thai Maman? Muthal Vasantham was another Manivannan/Satyaraj movie with better than average dialogues.

Seems like kind of a sad list so far, though...

Big A 05-18-2010 10:12 AM

Komal Swaminathan deserves a mention as well.

Maniratnam was a dialogue writer? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../confused2.gif I always thought that his dialogues were written by someone else?

HedgeYourBets 05-18-2010 09:43 PM

Kamal Hassan - Virumaandi, Dasavatharam, Anbe Sivam, Devar Maghan
Crazy Mohan - PKS, Pancha thandhiram, MMKR, Aboorva Sagodhargal, Kadhala Kadhala
