NAANAYAM MOVIE REVIEW
Review by : Behindwoods review board Starring: : Sibiraj, Prasanna, SP Balasubramaniam, Ramya Raj. Direction: Sakthi S Rajan Music: James Vasanthan Production: Capital Films A corrupt bank official sets a trap to get even with his blackmailer who in turn is so smart that he saves sensitive documents in the same bank the official is employed in. Naanayam’s premise provides enough scope for an edge-of-the-seat experience. The script employs countless twists and turns, although only a few of them really work – before which the damage of ruining it is already done. On the other hand, stripped bare of its regionalization, Naanayam also feels like inspired from a vaguely familiar Hollywood movie although there’s no evidence to call it a Dead Ringer. We won’t be surprised if it’s one. After all, Hollywood is ridden with movies on bank robbery – and many of them clever and convincing. SPB is the CEO of the Trust Bank, who reaches that position by shady means and marries the bank owner’s daughter to facilitate his easy ascend in the corporate ladder. Not only is he corrupt in his official life, his personal life is no better either. He has a concubine (Ramya) with whom he gets photographed in private by an anonymous blackmailer; the photos come to haunt him soon enough. In a bid to end the nuisance, he hires another gang (led by Sibiraj) to render him peace of mind. He also earns the Naanayam friendship of good fellow Prasanna, who saves his life from the villains. Prasanna is an honest Security Consultant and SPB offers him a job in his bank. But it becomes tricky for SPB to get rid of his blackmailer when the crook decides to save the documents in his own bank. Now will he seek the honest Prasanna’s assistance or rely on crook Sibiraj forms the rest of the movie. SPB’s role is the central plot character of the movie and Prasanna’s role in the latter half contributes to the missing ‘Naanayam’ part of it. Prasanna’s role, as the virtuous young man, is hardly new turf for him and the fact that he’s convincing isn’t at all surprising. Alternatively, Sibi’s role offers him very little; only that it’s different from his usual routine of lead roles. Some of the movie’s escape tricks are very lame – for instance Ramya does a mix of pole-dance-cum-disco to evade the laser beams that protect the bank’s lockers. You simply wonder: whoever came up with that idea!!! James Vasanthan’s songs are just about so-so and have no say in the movie’s progress. Thaman’s background score, however, peps up the scenes and provides it the required perkiness. Editing effects baffle the viewer in the name of novelty and appear more of an obstacle than helping with the movie’s flow. In retrospect, despite all the odds, there’s one thing strikingly honest about the movie: its title. It doesn’t seem to be born out of the urge to appease the taxmen with Tamil titles, but serves as an ironic reminder of what is not present in the movie. Verdict: Morally bankrupt! http://www.behindwoods.com/tamil-mov...a-sibiraj.html |

Style is good if there is substance. After seeing the hype around Nanayam, one anticipated a cracker of a thriller. Alas, it turns out to be a run of the mill assembly line thriller, particularly post interval.
The film is enticing in the beginning, but as the story opens up, there are far too many loopholes in the plot. We plunge right into the life and times of Ravi (Prasanna), an electronics engineer who designed the vaults of the “world’s safest bank” and wants to become an entrepreneur and has applied for a loan from the same bank. Viswanath (SPB) the CEO of the bank who helped Ravi to get the job, rejects his application. Meanwhile Ravi meets Nandini (Ramya) a journalist and in the very first meeting gets smitten by her. Nandini claims to be a divorcee, and after spending a night with her on the beach on reaching home he finds a stranger sitting in his home and dictating terms to him. He also finds Nandini’s ex-husbands body in the dickey of his car! The stranger who comes into his life is Fareed (Sibiraj) who blackmails him as he shows him photographs about Ravi’s involvement in the murder of Nandini’s ex- husband. The way out offered by Fareed to Ravi is that he should help him rob the bank whose security system he set up, as he has his own axe to grind against Viswanath. The trouble with the film etched from the 2008 English film The Bank Job, is that the suspense elements are revealed early in the second half. How can an intelligent guy like the hero of the film not realize that he is being taken for a sucker ride by his lady love? The way Nandini dances her way through laser beams is laughable. Songs are a major distraction in the film, and it pops up every 15 minutes. Prasanna as the nice guy in a bad situation is impressive and carries the show, while Sibiraj as the mean bad man is a revelation. Ramya and Yasmin are their mostly for the songs. The music of James Vasanthan is a major let down. Let us hope that director Sakthi S Rajan takes a little more care on his scripts and churns out the perfect thriller in future. Verdict- Thriller with no suspense! http://sify.com/movies/tamil/review....tid=5&cid=2429 |
