"Haasan looks best as Avtaar Singh, the Sikh singer, and Bush. His make up and appearance as the old woman Krishnavathi Badki is enough to give children nightmares. His Bengali investigator Pranab Kundu sounds more like a Nepali watchman who has spent too long in Chennai.

Some scenes and tracks could easily have been edited out had it not been for the 10 avatars gimmick.Self-indulgent, with shoddy special effects, unimaginative prosthetics, Dasavatar earns points only for the scale of production and for Haasan's audacity in embarking on something this ambitious and self-serving."

Dasavatar
Cast: Kamal Haasan, Asin, Jaya Prada, Mallika Sherawat
Director: KS Ravikumar
Rating: * 1/2

Dasavtharam Movie Review

The background score hammers incessantly making you immune to the melody (or the lack of it). The story is as far-fetched as the characters and the ultimate climax is the understanding of how the Tsunami of 2004 came about. At least that is what the makers are driving at. There are also two parallel stories running across, one of Kamal Haasan the sting operator (a fearless TV reporter) and another of Kamal Haasan the kung fu expert from Japan who is out to avenge his student's death. Add eight more Kamal Haasan's, and you get the drift of the title of the film!

CHECK OUT: Can Kamal Hassan entice the Audience?

The only actor working hard is Kamal Haasan who has to sit through various sittings of makeovers. The movie sometimes, borders on insanity. In the midst of a very intense scene, there's suddenly a PJ. You wonder what the intention of the director was - comedy or action? The action scenes too get robotic after a while, with another Kamal Haasan, the villain, jumping and flying around, reminding one of Arnie in TERMINATOR.

As for the story, everyone is after a vial, which contains a deadly virus. The vial surprisingly reaches India, Tamil Nadu to be precise, from an American laboratory. And following it for its safekeeping is scientist Kamal Haasan. The rest of the plot is of every Kamal Haasan crossing paths, some in search of the vial while others thrown in for comic relief.

In between all this, there's also Mallika Sherawat and Asin. Asin comes in twice; the first time is eight hundred years before, somewhere in the 1200s. She appears again eight hundred years later. No, she is no relative of the previous Asin. And no one found it necessary to explain the connection between the two.

Ram Gopal Varma buried himself in his self-glorification called, 'RGV Ki Aag'. He has found a serious contender in Kamal Haasan. bold lines - enna azagaa adatha understand pannirkkaanga. ivanga reviews ellaam oru matteraa??[/quote]

frm orkut

just back from the movie
7 PM show, Sion Cinemax. Mumbai

Positives:

1) movie is too good. except for a couple of places u dont realise it is a dubbed version (yes, it is. maybe only aandavar used his own voice but for others voices definitely dubbing was used, but they were very natural)

2) aandavar!!!!!! kaalil thaan vizhaNum. the way he speaks like a 90+ old granny with the hindi in the UP accent was wonderful. sadly it was so wonderful that nobody even realised the hard work and the pain. just like sehwag makes hitting 300s look ridiculously simple in contrast to dravid who makes scoring 100s look very painstaking.

negatives:

1) missed the first 20 mins, hence missed the nambi portions altogether.

2) the movie was shown in a small screen with around 50 seats capacity. half the seats were empty. this was for the evening show in a pretty well known multiplex that too quite close to mathunga. i think in other places the situation can be no better.

3) most of the 20-25 people were south indians, may be KH admirers. may be only 3-5 people were proper north indians.

4) no publicity anywhere. whaterver little on the net which is available have reviewed the movie in the most ridiculous manner.

5) at the introduction scene of Shingen, the title reads "Tokyo, Japan" in tamil. there is no hindi subtitles for shingen's japanese dialogues.

Verdict:

Unless the publicity is hiked up immediately, the movie may not see the second weekend in most theaters.

Yes, the common multiplex audience will definitely love it, if proper publicity is made. The movie has everything in it in the right proportions. It is even better than the tamil version. I loved it.

No idea about audience response. It will take a day or two for websites to publish the collections. But critics are'nt too happy with it. they were'nt happy with the tamil version too but it clicked with the masses. Lets see if bollywood junta proves the critics wrong.

another rev..

just back frm the show..... watched it in big cinemas, mulund......

me, roshan(smart boy) and 3 of my colleague(mumbaikars) went for the movie.....

the reaction frm them was, movie is jet speed till interval...... and then they started feeling unrest in the second half during poovaraghavan and kalifullaah episode......

overall, they said, movie is ok.....timepass..... but little lengthy.....

theatre was filled around 30% capacity..... cud hear lots of laughin during Pranab Kundu's(balram naidu) scenes.......

no scenes were cut...... kamalji dubbed for all the characters unlike the telugu version where spb dubbed.......

`Dashavtar’ is a Kamal act from start to finish. It goes on and on and on. But it has a few enjoyable set-pieces, and fast-paced action sequences.
