Cheran is decent performer. He can do justice to given Charactors. Eg :- Solla marandha kadhai and Raaman thediya seedhai . These two movies are also close to my heart .
My top list cheran movies ( both as actor and director) 1. Autograph - memories not be forgotten 2. Thavamaai thavamirundhu - paasam 3. DhEsiyageedham - changes to be made 4. Porkaalam - udambil ulla kuraigal ellaam oonamilleeengO 5. Paandavar bhoomi - mini autograph 6. Vetrikodi kattu - velinaatu panamOgaththil kuruttuththanamaai yEmaaraadhE 7. Solla marandha kadhai - ego vEndaam 8. Raaman thEdiya seedhai - Vaazhkkai vaazhvadharkE 9. Bharathi kannamma |

aiyo cheran. hero aasaiya vidungappa.. there are a lot of talented new faces dying to act in any movie.. make use of them pls.. [This is a proposition I have in general with regard to people's criticism about Cheran's acting in his own or others' films. So I'm just picking on your post to give it the right context. Hope you wouldn't mind.] I fail to understand people's grouse about Cheran acting in films. Many ask, why? Well, why not? He does mess up quite a bit in the emotionally charged scenes of his films, but surely he doesn't chew the scenery in all the films he acts in? He's quite competent for instance in 'pirivOm santhippOm.' There are several other actors in Tamil cinema, most of whom would either fall in the same ballpark as Cheran or in a much worse league, but we don't seem to harbour this sort of grouse with them. To put it bluntly, I think the root cause behind this complaint is his everyman looks. At some level, there's a "wait, this was not supposed to be your domain" reaction we show towards actors like Cheran. |

I am big fan of Cheran too. My concern is that, ever since he started acting, his creativity has narrowed down to stories where only he can play the lead role, which is a big limitation. I am sure, if he had not been successfull with his acting, he would have surely casted someone else for an urban story like Maayakkannaadi (even then it would have failed!!).
I also have expectation for Pokkisham. Hope he can deliver. |

Do you mean to say the lead roles in his earlier films (bArathi kaNNammA, poRkAlam, thEsiya gItham, veRRikkodi kattu, pANdavar bUmi) were actually "outside" what he could have played? Au contraire, I think he could have easily placed himself in any of these films and they would have been no different. (In fact, all these roles look quite the same to me! But that's for another day.) I am sure, if he had not been successfull with his acting, he would have surely casted someone else for an urban story like Maayakkannaadi |

But My grouse is, Cheran is showing off the same character and attitude in all of his movies.. It is becoming a stereotype.. |

glad that someone started a thread for this one.
He was making message movies one time - since paandavar bhoomi - started settling into making somewhat subtler and dignified films. The thing I like about his movies are the 'sentiments' . He does not make them like 'P Vasu' sentiment films, but more like 'Bheemsingh' school of sentiment films. The sentiments are the foundation and the realistic crafting of the characters and subtle portrayals play out while the focus is always on the 'foundation' and a touching climax. Even the mediocre maayakannadi had a somewhat touching climax - if you leave out the lenght sermon at the end. Vetri Kodi kattu too had the lengthy sermon at the end. I watched that one with my friend who had made it big in dubai and he enjoyed every bit of it. his movies are like Visu's Arattai Arangam while a lesser director would have made the very same subject as Vijaya TR's arattai arangam!! |

In this light, I think someone like a Thangar Bachaan is actually better than Cheran. At least, he has his "storytelling instincts" in place. I know you mentioned in exactly one respect. But even then that is a tough statement. In fact, after having been put through paLLikkoodam, I will object to Thankar and 'respect' being used in the same sentence.
