Default Smoking scenes in films

Smoking scenes in films: Ban may be diluted :
THE Health Ministry's proposal to disallow advertising of brand
extensions could come as a blow to companies promoting products such
as apparel, greeting cards or bravery awards using tobacco brand
names.
According to highly placed sources, the Government wants to stop
tobacco companies from indulging in any kind of surrogate
advertising. "It is being proposed that the ban on advertising of
tobacco products be extended to these products or services as well.
Also, the colours or logo used by the tobacco brand cannot be used
in brand extensions," they said.
To discourage people from smoking, the Health Ministry is keen that
leading characters in films and television serials do not smoke on
screen. A study conducted earlier by the World Health Organisation
had indicated that 76 per cent of Indian films showed actors and
actresses puffing away. WHO had urged the film industry to stop
showing such scenes, as they had a negative influence on children?
Since then, the Ministry has held meetings with officials of the
Censor Board and representatives of television channels. "We are
planning to prohibit showing any character in film or television
from using or displaying any tobacco product. In the case of older
movies or television shows with smoking scenes, a warning message
like `Use of tobacco is injurious to health' should appear,
highlighting the harmful effects of tobacco consumption," the
sources said.

The Central Government of Chennai's decision to ban depiction of
smoking in films has evoked mixed reactions from film personalities.
While many are not sure of what exactly the ban amounts to, some
others have welcomed the decision. Some cine stars talk :
· Ultimate Star Ajit’s ‘Attagasam’ has started by a quotation
: “Cigarette smoking is injourious to the health” by Ajith himself
and tells that he is going to reduce smoking on screens. His Latest
film ‘Ji’ didn’t show him smoking.
· Filmmaker Gautham asks: "What if I show a character smoking
and also show that he dies four scenes later because of smoking? Am
I not allowed to do that? I think it's okay as long as one does not
glorify smoking. What if I, like Ram Gopal Varma says: Whenever I
show characters like gangsters, I also show how they die. Films are
just meant to be watched and talked out, it's about entertainment.
You feel good and take it back home." In`Vettaiyaadu Vilayaadu.' (
his latest film ) "A couple of main characters smoke in the film,
but not Kamal. But then, it's not a big deal. I can take it out if
it has to removed"
· Many actors already have made it a point not to smoke on
screen. Kamal Haasan has for long maintained a strict policy of not
smoking on screen. Even the Superstar, known for his antics with the
cigarette, has now rewritten his style-statements with branded
bubblegum and biscuits in `Chandramukhi.'
· While Madhavan ensures that the director has a good enough
reason to make him smoke, Suriya quit smoking on screen a few films
ago, after he took a vow in public at a function. "I don't remember
what function that was, but since I promised, I stuck to it. I
haven't smoked in `Aayitha Ezhuthu, `Peralagan,' `Maayavi' or even
`Gajini'. I think it is a good move to ban smoking scenes. Because
as actors, we do have a social responsibility and I already feel bad
about the damage I've caused by smoking in my earlier films," he
says.
· Film theory expert and director Hariharan, however, says:
"It is ridiculous, absurd and simplistic to believe that cinema is
responsible for habits. People were smoking even before the movies
came. The cigarette is an expression of depression or portrayal of
character and smoking is just a dramatic gesture." "After having
smoked in many films, how can I talk about this or tell people not
to smoke," a top Tamil star says, almost embarrassed. Unsure of what
stand to take, most technicians and actors have decided to let their
unions speak on the issue. A formal reaction from the film industry
is expected soon.

The ban is most welcome. Only thing is actors like rajini will have no work, which is however a boon to the film industry.

kasi,
what do U mean?
What do I mean??

So u think that rajini lives on cigarrettes... I dont care about his personal life.. If rajini smokes whats ur problem?? is he blowing the smoke all over ur face?? or is he asking you to smoke like him??

remember the scene in ninaithalae inikkum where P.V. asks him to do the trick for 10 times for his toyota car.. how famous was that scene.. thats where it started.. and remember rajini is not the only guy who is smoking on screen..

kamal has done that in the past...
ajith is doing it now..
vijay is doing it in almost every film..
even simbhu/danush are doing..

in CM he dint do that at all coz the character is like that.. in batshah, baba he did that coz he came in as a rowdy.. even in batshah he dint smoke when he came as manickam..

so if everybody is smoking on screens I dont understand why poeple are blaming rajini alone..

even in GF, KSR has spent a crore (as he says) to shoot a scene where apparently ajith smokes..

rajini does a hell of a lot more than just smoking!! He doesn't need that for a hit.

Look at Chadnramukhi, u don't see him with a ciggerette once in the film. the film is still a super duper hit!!!

But this ban is welcome though. 8)

rajini smoked a lot on screens than any other actors.
that's was one of his style to attract crowd.
i read in sify and they wrote an article about indian actors smoking on screen and rajini's name was at the top.vj follows his style to make his films run.

Apparently Ramadoss discussed the issue with I & B people but
went ahead and announced the ban on June 1 (Non smoking day)
without their feed back, neither did he consult or get approval
from Censor board, some loop holes in the anti tobacco act helped
him to imply these bans, the ban and new rules is still not 100%
sure to come into effect and some modifications will probably
take place.

Many people including Sharmila Tagore feel it is not neccessary
to totally ban showing use of tobacco in movies but a caution
message can be shown before and after the movie, I think this
is quite reasonable.

On the other hand, to ban showing tobacco being used in movies
totally seems little extreme, isn't it? Why not leave the decision
to censor board to decide where it should be allowed and where
it should not, depending on the context, charecterization and
impact of the particular scene on the audience? No doubt,
when use of cigarette promotes a cool look in a particular scene,
it can encourage the fans to smoke but it is not always used
in movie for giving it a cool look, so it should be left to the
censor board to make the decision IMO.

Cable broadcast related organizations are also very worried
about this ban, since there are more than 250 cable channels
in India and growing, these channels include lots of foreign
channels including many channels that show english movies
all the time, the foreigners are not going to make movies
keeping the ban implied by India in mind, as per the new rules
new movies made post the date the ban has been applied
just cannot show use of any tobacco products, so how
are the programs shown on these foreign channels going to
be controlled?

Even sports related cable channels are concerned, many sports events have banners advertising tobacco products
and it will be difficult to elimitate those too while showing
a live action sports event, say a car racing for ex, how are
they going to control this?

As per the new rules, all movies/tv shows etc produced
before the date of the new rule announcement must show
captions along with the particular scene showing tobacco use
with warning statements about health hazards due to the
use of tobacco products, if this rule does come into effect,
most of Rajini movies will have the captions through half of the
movie.

when did rasini start caring about the charecter?
rasini's charecter in cm is of a psychyartist, does he convincingly
act like a sensible psychyartist? you can give million such examples

the one and only reason he did not smoke in cm is because
of the plastic surgery which he did for his lips and doctors
strictly prohibited him from smoking, this is a fact stated
by p.vasu in his interview
