...all Elizabeth Fraser. I can see why some have referred to her as the voice of God, although I read she (understandably) loathes that description.
Regardless of the appropriateness of the quote, wouldn't you still say it's fitting? Her layered vocals are as if a chorus of angels were singing something unintelligibly gorgeous. It's as if you can see the music. God I miss the Cocteau Twins (live).

Heaven and Las Vegas is definitely seminal, but I always find myself being pulled back to milk and kisses, over and over again. There's something so powerful about the rhythm of "violane" that forces me to listen to the entire album. Then when I hit "calfskin smack" it's all over. The 5-6 second pause before the song starts in earnest is like an eternity of eager anticipation. If you can find a copy with "primitive heart" I'd recommend it, it's not on the original US release.

Blue Bell Knoll was the album that addicted me to the Cocteau Twins. It lacks some of the bass of the later albums, which is what it is, but it's in my top 3 Cocteau Twins albums. Well worth it.

Find me a shitty Cocteau Twins album though. I don't think it'll happen. You can't go wrong.

I grew up with the Cocteau Twins. Many people here grew up listening to Tori, I grew up listening to Elizabeth.

Well, there's no 'This Mortal Coil' thread to speak of that I'm able to find so I thought i'd simply post this in here...

Anyway, a remastered 4 disc set of the TMC albums coming out very soon via 4ad! The 4th disc, entitled 'dust and guitars' is a collection of singles including one previously unreleased Neil Young track. Very exciting news! Here's a link for more information:

Menju, have you still not listened to Heaven or Las Vegas? 'Cause I like their whole discography but that album is what made me fall in love with them.

I still haven't! It's terrible of me, I know. But it's on my list. Might give it a listen on Spotify later. Actually, thinking about it, it's the only Cocteau Twins studio album I've not heard yet. WTF! (I've heard the songs from it that are on Stars and Topsoil though, and love them.)

I can sense Victorialand will be on heavy rotation this winter; it makes perfect winter listening, I feel.

Um, NM? I just read a whole bunch of shit about the remastered box set. Apparently it sucks? Can anyone confirm this? Either way I will have to hear it for myself. *downloads*

I downloaded a flac version of the remastered "Heaven or Las Vegas" and was very unimpressed - it was just louder in the wrong places.

^Aw I disagree!! I think it was a great job, especially with the bass sounds. Fifty-Fifty Clown in particular.

ahhh! love it!

HOLV is one the best albums of all-time, imo. It is joyous, beautiful, moody, dark and playful all at once. Road, River and Rail is one of my favorite songs.Ever. I used to cover it when I had a band years ago and it was ridiculously hard to come up with some lyrics that seemed coherent, since no one except Liz really knows what the actual lyrics are! Lol.

^definitely one of the highlights of 'Milk & Kisses'! I'm also partial to 'Seekers Who Are Lovers'.

Thanks for the feedback, will be purchasing Treasure in the very near future.
You REALLY cannot go wrong with 'Treasure' it's quite an AMAZING album to say the least. Also, if you already really like Victorialand I'd suggest you give 'The Moon and the Melodies' a couple of listens... it's equally righteous and aerial!

I finally just listened to the remastered Treasure.

WORST. REMASTER. I HAVE EVER HEARD.

Seriously, how did they get away with this? Who gave it the greenlight? They basically remixed the songs, taking away the bass and making them sound shrill and tinny.

I just needed to bitch about that.

This is about the time of year that I start breaking out Victorialand.

As for Treasure, I've only ever heard the remastered version so have nothing to compare to but I've definitely heard some mixed things about the remasters before.

"A rare nostalgia moment: i didnt think any footage from the Heaven or Las Vegas tour in 1990 existed and i remember how cool it was being able to have a lighting designer for the first time that tour but have never seen how our stage looked from the audience till tonight so this is a treat to me. The whole concert in on youtube now pretty much. And my god, what a voice Elizabeth had on this tour, absolutely perfect on every song. Some rare good memories."
— Simon Raymonde, bassist

The quality isnt amazing but you have to balance that against the rarity.

Setlist:

Blue Bell Knoll
From the Flagstones
Iceblink Luck
Orange Appled
Wolf in the Breast
Crushed
Pitch the Baby
Cherry Coloured Funk
Road, River and Rail
A Kissed Out Red Floatboat
Heaven or Las Vegas
Aikea Guinea
Pink Orange Red

Encore:

Whales’ Tails
Mizake the Mizan
