Mariah Carey

Well, her new single is out. Such as it is.

I've got to hand it to the woman for being really good at staying commercially viable, even at the expense of producing anything substantial or worthy of her (faded) talent. She's essentially a guest artist on her own song here.

That said, I really loved Mariah Carey for the first 7 years of her career. Everything since "Butterfly" has been really lackluster for me. Still, when she was good she was really really good, in my opinion.

myspacepro 03-08-2012 07:56 AM

She's had three distinct careers so far that went from Celine Dion to Lil Kim. . and now she's Paula Abdul.

Mariah is incredibly talented. One of her most heartfelt songs was from her last album called "HateU". Her talent hasn't faded. She is still a great song writer.

Mariah has been in the game since 1990 and has stood the test of time. Unlike Madonna, she at least hasn't sold herself out to dance pop songs about sex drugs and partying which is what everyone is doing now.

With her new single it will be released as an EP with 7 versions apparently including a radio mix without any rap and also versions with rerecorded vocals.

YonkFiorc 03-08-2012 02:23 PM

I'm pretty sure her arm is made of rubber.

Butiqueso 03-08-2012 11:29 PM

I have to admit, I am a big Mariah Carey fan. Butterfly is definitely her best album but Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is really good too. That said, I don't really like Triumphant and I agree that it's like she's a guest on her own song. She is extremely talented and the last time I saw her live she put on a wonderful show.

I never listened to E=MC2 because Touch My Body is an atrocious song.

Do we need a Madonna vs. Mariah Deathmatch thread already? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif Seriously though, while I've been quite vocal about my disappointment with Madonna's recent ventures around here, she wrote the book on dance-pop-party-tunes and has enough artistic integrity left for two Mariah Careys.

She's had three distinct careers so far that went from Celine Dion to Lil Kim. . and now she's Paula Abdul. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/laugh.gif The first half of her career was pretty amazing. Mariah was clearly born to sing. In the history of modern popular music, I think her voice is right up there with the greats (and I've read she's largely responsible for penning some her greatest hits). But she went from being soulful and inspiring to washing Snoop Dogg's car in a music video. Which is fine. Just sayin'

Love Mariah and always will. She is an incredible lyricist.. and why even bother talking about her vocals.. for a whole decade she had the prettiest tone and range.

All that said, the single seems 50/50 rap and her singing.. So whose song is it really? Mariah featuring Rick Ross or the other way around.

Since she has had so many #1 singles I won't talk about my favorite songs from that list. I will say I thought Charm Bracelet is extremely underrated. I love that album. Especially the song "I only wanted."

WomanBreast40356 03-09-2012 03:57 AM

It's not as heavy-handed as "Born This Way" or annoying as "Gimme Your Luvin'," but... I don't know, it's not bad, it's not great, it's just kinda there.

That being said, "I Only Wanted" IS a major tune. I love the Latin-tinged trilogy that was "My All/After Tonight/I Only Wanted."

And to wrap up my Mariah thoughts, "Petals" is the best songwriting she's ever done. That is all.

SallythePearl 03-09-2012 05:32 AM

I hate to bust everyone's bubble, but the best thing she's ever done was her MTV Unplugged, right around the time her second album came out. THAT'S the Mariah I miss.

BigBobdd 04-08-2012 08:37 AM

^ Daydream would be my favorite, though i do love a lot of her later singles.

I'm That Chick
I'll Be Loving U Long Time (album version)

rammossyAcron 04-08-2012 09:15 AM

Butterfly was the beginning of the end, but I'll always love the stuff that came before it. I'll always have her to thank for "Vision of Love", which won me mah first evah karaoke competition. (Yes, I am indeed a karaoke queen.)

werkeeque 04-08-2012 10:37 AM

The new remix of Triumphant is out!!! It's amazing! The throwback mix! It's very dance pop and old school Mariah!

werkeeque 04-08-2012 11:29 AM

My top10:

Outside
HateU
Lead the Way
Loverboy
Butterfly
Can't take that away
Yours
Candy Bling
Bliss
I Wish You Well

Deengealf 04-08-2012 11:50 AM

Mariah will always have a special place in my heart. She was my number one artist before Tori. My favorite albums are a toss up between Music Box and Daydream and Butterfly coming in a close 2nd. Except for Heartbreaker I don't know much from Rainbow on.
This song has way too much rapping it. I understand if there is a little or a remix with a rapper but damn like someone said it's like she is the guest artist. This thread is getting me to want to listen to her and bring me back to my early teen years! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

shiciapsisy 04-08-2012 04:22 PM

Mariah confession: I think among her "oldschool" albums Music Box is really overrated, it's not that good, and her 2nd, Emotions is very underrated - it's one of her best overall. I don't really care much for anything post Butterfly. The one thing I really like from that era would be "Fly Like A Bird" and the Whitney Houston duet

top 10
Someday
Vanishing
If It's Over
The Wind
Fantasy
Open Arms
I Am Free
My All
The Roof
The Beautiful Ones

honorable mentions:
When You Believe
Fly Like A Bird

zzquo0iR 04-08-2012 08:07 PM

My All
All I Want For Christmas Is You (duh)
Hero
I'll Be There
Fantasy
Always Be My Baby
Honey
We Belong Together
Shake It Off
Obsessed

ExpodoDop 04-08-2012 10:01 PM

My favorites in no particular order:

My All

I'll Be There
Someday
Hero
All I Want For Christmas Is You
O Holy Night (from the first Christmas album)
Without You
Dreamlover

Deengealf 04-08-2012 11:30 PM

I just think that Music Box really brings me back to being 11 when I bought the tape on my birthday and it was the 1st album of hers that I bought. I really need to go back and listen to all her albums straight through again. It has been many many years. I do agree Emotions is under rated. When I first got it, i really didnt like it and gave it to my mom but then took it back because I needed to give it more of a chance.

my Favs no particular order

Someday
Vanishing
Love takes time
Cant let go
Til the end of time
So Blessed
Music box
Dreamlover
Never Forget you
When i saw you
Always be my baby
Forever
I still believe
Butterfly
Breakdown
Whenever you call

SallythePearl 04-09-2012 03:51 AM

"So Blessed"! LOVE that song!
