I did not love the first album - it wasn't offensive but didn't leave much of an impression. That said, I think Virtue is definitely a step in the right direction. The production really helps her - I get a bit of Dar Williams meets Vienna Teng from her. Cassandra and A Woman, A Woman, A Century Of Sleep are my favorites at the moment. This actually has a chance to make my end of year list (although it's been a really good year for music all around so who knows).
Agree that Virtue is a better album but I do love them both. I am certain it will make my 2011 top-ten although I'm not sure where on the list yet. The Decemberists and Gillian Welch are currently looking at joint #1.

Trellik Tower is one of the loveliest songs I have heard this year. Good stuff.
I couldn't make her gig in London last night as I was seeing the excellent Po' Girl but someone has posted this version of Trellick Tower from it with better video and audio than the one above.

Beautiful.

new video: emmy the great – ‘paper forest (in the afterglow of rapture)’
We’ve seen director Lucy Needs’ work a lot lately (Slow Club’s ‘Two Cousins‘, Alice Gold’s ‘Cry Cry Cry‘) and this latest video, for Emmy The Great’s bittersweet new single ‘Paper Forest (In The Afterglow Of Rapture)’ again has a dance-like-no-one’s-watching kinda vibe, only this time it’s an older woman who is lost in the music as Emmy sits sadly by

Default Emmy the Great needs more love
Stepping up my promotion of this brilliant but underrated, outside of London indie hipsters at least, artist.

Melodic, lyrical indie folk and pop and an engaging live performer. What's not to ?

Emmy the Great - Easter Parade

Emmy the Great - Trelick Tower

Emmy the Great and Tim Wheeler - This is Christmas
Hello everyone,

Emma and Tim here. We've made a Christmas album and we want you to be a part of it!

It all started last Christmas when we got snowed in, and we've spent large parts of this year working on it, which means we're now really, really in the holiday spirit. We will be bringing this seasonal cheer to you, bells, elves, presents, zombies...so make sure you keep in touch. It's going to be a very Christmasssy Christmas - like a Christmas lunch that never ends, where you don't get sick and nobody cries. Amazing.

Like our Facebook page, listen and download the first track exclusively FOR FREE, and be in the loop for all the fun to come. We can't wait for you to hear it.

Christmas gig at Bush Hall on sale now for 14th December AND Rough Trade East Instore with band on 15th December

Weds 14th Dec 2011 - Bush Hall Christmas Gig - Buy Tickets

Virtue is still my favourite album of hers but This Is Christmas has been added to the very small selection of Christmas themed albums that get regular plays in this house.

Brilliant Emmy the Great gig in London last night. She was with a string quartet and all female choir as part of the South Bank Centre's Worlds of the Woman festival.

I grabbed a few videos. They are normally quite strict about recording at the SBC but Emma asked people to video and send her the links.

Exit Night Juliet's Theme

First Love

Desert Prom (new song!)

Trellick Tower

Canopies and Drapes

MIA

Fade Into You (Mazzy Star cover)

They are arranged into a playlist here
