The videos:

Jump should have been 2nd or 3rd single

Gilowero 01-19-2012 09:01 AM

The song "Gimme Gimme Gimme" by ABBA which informed "Hung Up."

The song "Im Nin'Alu" which features in the chorus of "Isaac."

I found this version of the record for pretty cheap at the local record store:

I've actually never heard Confessions prior to this and wow - I fucking love Future Lovers.

^WHUT?

I'm glad you finally heard it! It's one of my faves!

Gilowero 01-26-2012 05:23 AM

It's definitely one of her better produced records. It really kinda envelops you. And one of my favorite things ever is Madonna ending an all-dance album on a few quiet strums of acoustic guitar and nothing else ("Like it or Not"). http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../loveicon2.gif

I have an even worse confession (http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif) to make: I absolutely hated this album in 2005. I finally warmed up to it in early 2008 and have loved it ever since. "Like it or Not" is definitely a fav from it. Get Together = http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo.../loveicon2.gif.

I wasn't very excited either when it came out and did not buy it at its release, which was a first for me regarding a Madonna album. The whole disco crap really bugged me at the time as it felt like a big step backwards, but I warmed up to the album later. The Hung Up and Sorry videos still make me cringe though (and the Jump video too of course).

er, wrong thread

Sorry is the last great Madonna video. I love how campy and over the top it is. How can you not love dance cage-fighting and Madonna abducting boys to go to the roller disco?

AbraroLib 02-01-2012 10:38 AM

such a solid album..the only song i don't care for is Push. i just find it really grating. i could live without How High too. i wish she'd included Fighting Spirit instead:

Gilowero 02-01-2012 10:42 AM

^ I agree, though I don't care for "Fighting Spirit" either. I'd just rather "Push" didn't exist. I could live without "I Love New York" as well.

This is my 2nd favorite Madonna album. How High is actually my favorite track from the album. Forbidden Love from the Confessions Tour dvd is so beautiful and makes me really emotional. I love the Paper Faces remix of Let It Will Be; probably one of my all-time favorite remixes of Madonna. I Love New York is the weakest track on the album to me. Get Together was a late bloomer for me. I had to go back and listen and watch the music video for it before I finally appreciated it. I love Fighting Spirit and History - great b-sides!

Listened to COAD the other day for the first time in... well it must be a few years now!

The ones that jumped out at me as being really great actually were Future Lovers and Forbidden Love, both of which I think are very good indeed. Also really liked Isaac.

As for the negatives, I like the sound of I Love New York but the lyrics really are abysmal. Even if tongue in cheek, they're just shite. Some of the later songs are also a bit meh but overall I enjoyed it.

Forbidden Love was one that slowly grew to be one of my favorite songs from Confessions. Especially the performance of it on the tour dvd and the wonderful choreography that went along with it.

I always crack up at these "How High" lyrics:

"Nobody's perfect...I guess I deserve it."

I mean, did she mean to rattle off two song titles from "Music"?

That's my main problem with COAD. It's essentially the same trite, recycled lyrical crap that she was spouting on American Life (and to a much lesser extent, Music) but with more marketable production.

Lauramalina 04-01-2012 11:11 AM

This is one of my least favorite Madonna records, but I still like it. It's like designer perfume ... scents we've experiences before combined VERY skillfully. Having been a fan of the much-maligned American Life album, I definitely (to quote the lady herself) felt like "I've heard it all before." The same spiritual hooey and complaints about fame ... but without that arty Mirwais at the helm! And with sparkles! And you can dance to it! I also felt like her vocals were polished to the point of lacking personality on this record. She doesn't sound as substantial as she has on previous records, especially considering how impressive her vocal performances on American Life were.

That said ... I said I like the record overall, and I do. I said "designer perfume" ... this IS a very well-made album. Only the Grinch would deny some of these hooks. For the most part, she also understands the power of suggestion ... some of the best tracks are the least in-your-face. I think "Get Together," for example, is pretty amazing. And "Forbidden Love," believe it or not, is one of my all-time favorite Madonna tracks. She's really great when she finds that sweet spot between dance songs and ballads ... "Forbidden Love" is a bit of both. It's sexy, it's insinuating, and there's some genuine longing there. I just wish there were more of that on the rest of the record.

I'll say this ... when I think of my favorite Madonna records, I NEVER think of this one. But when I play it, I'm kind of surprised by how easy it goes down and how good it is. It just somehow feels less "Madonna" to me than most of her other albums.

I took it as a nod to those songs.
