Whatever. It doesn't scare me at all.
|
Homogenic is her most definitive, solid album. It hits me like a brick.
It's my favourite too. No chaff. |
Unravel came on random on my ipod while driving home today, and it's up there in at the top of my favourite Björk songs I think. Such a beautiful melody.
|
I love the version of Unravel from the Vespertine Live CD.

I love everything about the Homogenic-era. It's all so tight, cohesive, and unique. When I was in Architecture school at Auburn, someone made a project inspired by this album, and it was spot-on. You could just look at it and tell that it was somehow related to the Homogenic album.
I used to play "All Is Full Of Love" from the Stigmata soundtrack on repeat back in college. And the video is so weird and warm at the same time. It's definitely my favorite Bjork album! |
I love this album so much! The videos are fabulous, especially "Bachelorette," which I think is just so clever and creative. "Five Years" is definitely a favorite song too. I love how she's angry in it, since a lot of her songs are more uplifting or serene.
Also, I saw the other thread, and "Alarm Call" is amazing and anyone to suggest otherwise is wrong. So that basically ends that discussion. |
Why oh why did she include THAT version of "Immature" here? It's the only bad thing about Homogenic. There's this other version, the one that appeared on Family Tree, that would've work better than the album version.
And this era has the best b-sides. "Sod off" kicks ass. |
While I prefer the Bjork version of Immature, it would be so out of place on Homogenic. It's just piano and voice while the rest of the songs are these big electronic numbers, so in that sense the Mark Bell remix fits in nicely.

I love both versions of Immature. I wish there was an alternate version of like, every single Bjork song.
|
^With all the singles/EPs she's released (especially in the 90s), there almost is.
I've heard so many alternate takes on her tracks I sometimes forget which is the original. |
Yeah but I don't mean club mixes or that digital hardcore crap, just something subtle like Immature and Cover Me (cave version.) I mostly hate the remixes from this album (Alec Empire, ugh)

Post and Homogenic are quite the one-two punch. This album is also just insanely good. The first four tracks taken together can probably trump almost any record's opening suite of songs that I can think of. I think it really shut up detractors that thought her act was a shtick, or that she was some sort of cutesy elf. The level of musicianship here is pretty astonishing. I hate the word "epic," but it really is the best word to describe a song like "Bachelorette."
I don't quite love everything on it, I have to admit. "All Neon Like" and "Immature" in particular don't do much for me, and I definitely think the second half is weaker than the first. That said, "Pluto" and "All Is Full of Love" are incredible. I do prefer the Plaid Mix of "All Is Full of Love" to the album version, but it's still a gorgeous album closer. |
Has anyone heard the early version of "5 Years"? It was performed live during the Post tour (where, I'm not sure), and I wonder if a demo exists. No disrespect to the studio version (gotta love the strings!), but the mechanical noises were a nice touch.
|
^And there was accordian on the Post-era versions.
