Every once in a while, a song will resonate with me in just the right way and it will make the old tears start falling. Today, it was "Merman"...specifically the version from the solo London show in '99 when she tells the audience that it was for Matthew Shepard. Breaks my heart...
Also... Baker Baker Playboy Mommy China (don't look at me like that. I was 17 and it reminded me of a boy.) Doughnut Song (gets me every time, that's why it'll always be my favorite) Annnnnnd, actually I think that's about it. |

Putting the Damage On (crushing on a straight boy)
Winter (hating my parents/junior high) Here. In My Head (*sigh* more straight boy) A Sorta Fairytale (the ashes of my year of stonerdom) Amber Waves (afraid my friend was getting raped in south padre....seriously) Tear In Your Hand (balcony in the village, didn't want to leave nyc) Little Earthquakes (needing to grow up) Precious Things (i betrayed a friend) Silent All These Years (i didn't get what i wanted) Pretty Good Year (reflecting on when i didn't get what i wanted) Gold Dust (life is short) Cooling (autumn is lonely and beautiful) Baker, Baker (iraq war) Upside Down (we're all alone in this world) All fantastic songs that I love. Mostly pretty terrible memories. I don't think Tori's ever moved me to tears in an uplifting way.* *I guess Gold Dust is uplifting. |

Many of Tori's songs have gotten to me at different times, depending on what I'm going through, but there are three that get me every time, no exception:
Winter - always has made me think about the turbulent relationship I had with my dad, & since he passed away 16 months ago it has become too much for me to listen to. Gold Dust - just makes me think about things in the past & friendships I no longer have, even though it is an uplifting song in some ways. Bells For Her - again, this makes me think about close friendships that ended, and not because I wanted them to. |

I remember driving around in my car one night listening to a Tori mix and Hey Jupiter came on and I started crying.
I think it all depends on circumstance... what's happening in my life at a particular time. I've cried heavily to Pretty Good Year. Northern Lad has moved me to tears before, I do believe. And, most recently, Digital Ghost. A friend of my mother's passed away within the last year, and the lyrics in DG suddenly seemed so... real. Which is why it's become one of my favorites. |

Silent All These Years
"Saved again by the garbage truck, I got something to say but - nothing comes." Winter "When you gonna make up your mind? When you gonna love you as much as I do?" Baker Baker "Thought I'd make friends with time. Thought I'd be flying. Maybe not this time." Honey "So when we died, I tried to bribe, the undertaker - And I'm not sure what you're doin', or the reasons." Hey Jupitier [Alternate] "I go, from day to day, I know where the cupboards are - I know where the car is parked - I know, he isn't you." Playboy Mommy "You got a playboy mommy, come home." 1000 Oceans "I'm aware what the rules are, but you know that I will run, you know that I will follow you." A Sorta Fairytale "I don't, or I didn't, think we'd end up like this ..." Strange "Strange, now I'm finally in. The party has begun, it's not like I can't feel you still ..." Gold Dust "Letting names hang in the air, what color hair? (Auburn Crimson)" Digital Ghost "I won't go even if, in your heart, only beats 1's and 0's." Our New Year "Lately I'm sure it's you there, waving in the distance. Closer ... the closer I get, disappointment tails, yes it tails. They just have the same color of your hair, You're not there." |

I'm one of those people who has never cried at a piece of music in their entire life, but there are certain tracks that sort of give me that feeling you get when you're about to cry:
Sister Janet Winter Baker, Baker Hey Jupiter (album version) Merman Putting The Damage On Mother Cloud On My Tongue When I Was Dreaming (no, really - there's something about that piano line) So, all piano ballads from the first six years of her career or so. |

Interesting lack of China in this thread. I guess the corniness of the lyrics outweighs the sadness of the melody. |
