Have you guys seen the comments Leila left under the Guardian's review of U&I? I find it both hilarious and slightly pathetic. She apparently didn't like the way the reviewer wrote about her album:
"loops of electronica".....what does that even mean? "hard to understand".....coming from a seeming simpleton like yourself, this really is not saying much. love this picture of you by the way....http://image.guardian.co.uk/sys-imag...ulallen460.jpg shame you didn't have the talent to have done anything other than write (badly) about other peoples art. thank you nonetheless ..............................leila......says........................ ...................................DADA............................... Hello Mr. MacInnes, It's strange but i was just considering doing a "part 2" as my initial response was rather knee jerk and a bit mean....i am tough but i am not mean. Art cannot just be a basic commodity that is made to please. It is people like me that give courage to more "popular" artists to be brave. I am not obliged to give you a "reward" (unless you are a child or a puppy). People are complicated and difficult, it is so wrong to make music that conveys these complexities? I suppose the only thing that really offended me is that you can't see the humour (brutalist in nature, but humour nonetheless) of what i do. ......in the words of Mr.Duchamp....Art 'a l'etat brute...........Art in the raw state. yours defiantly leila. tut tut Mr. MacInnes It's one thing for me to influence other artists, but to have journalists steal languange from me is really taking the proverbial. Maybe in another realm of critique you can appropriate "brutalist humour", but your taste in music places you provincial at best. I was going to leave this, but it really is too much fun. In reference to Justice, they are not bad. Simple, contained and very much in line with an existing established trajectory that would be of comfort to your profession (i prefer Oizo myself). Next time you interview them, please tell them that you think they write better melodies than me...they will laugh. Pop music? I would beat you hands down in any quiz. But then I reckon you think Baby Love by the Supremes is better than Remember by the Shangri-Las? Some people look for art that gives them solace from the carnage of life. Others look for art that affirms the absurdities, therby making life more understandable. I think that we are extraordinary animals, the most gifted on this planet and to patronise people with only simplistic art that is concerned with comfort, reassurance and acceptance is a waste. You are right that it is a matter of taste. leila |
