What is the thing about this phone call? It seems to trigger a memory but I can't remember if I heard it or just heard of it.

c-cialis 04-12-2011 06:26 AM

I also remember that there was something, but I can't remember what was talked about in that phone-call..The phone-call was very low-quality and quite creepy...I don't know where to find that one again

Ruiceara 05-12-2011 12:11 AM

Didn't he take credit for writing "little earthquakes"? And said she ripped him off?

HitAttetlyTek 05-12-2011 01:36 AM

How did this phone call get out? And how do none of us seem to remember? It seems like something we'd all be very aware of.

c-cialis 05-12-2011 02:19 AM

well, I think it was on @.
I was not a member back then, but I am sure it was posted there. The quality was miserable and there was a girl on the phone with who he talked to. It was very, well disturbing somehow. But I can't remember anymore, honestly. I think I made it through it only one, but somebody definately uploaded it once, that's for sure.
And yeah, the girl taped the phone-call

JRixlcvF 06-11-2011 06:18 PM

It was disturbing because the girl altered her voice so she wouldn't be recognized. It was all slowed down and creepy sounding. It gave it this very sinister feel.

Abraham 06-11-2011 07:37 PM

I do remember hearing it, with the girl's voice distorted and him talking. But it was on @forumz and my memory is like a sieve so I can't remember what was said exactly.

But yes, I agree that this song is definitely about Caton.

texbrease 07-11-2011 02:03 PM

This track coming from the same period as TBK really highlights the difference between Tori when she's fired up in a very personal way, as opposed to conceptually pissed off in some hypothetical way. The difference in her creativity in those two distinct situations can be striking.

tinamasak 07-12-2011 02:33 AM

I remember the weird phone call. Caton was trying to impress a girl by playing LE and/or YKTR demos for her and taking the credit for her sound-- something like "See?! No piano!"

As much of a douchebag as he apparently is, though, his contributions to her music were always fantastic. Even when it was to inspire a pissed off revenge song like NDB.

c-cialis 07-12-2011 03:05 AM

I would be devastated if a friend and a person with who I've worked with for 20 years would do something like this. That thing was not only that she kicked him and wrote this song afterwards. This is just something you would never expect a friend doing to you, never.
She doesn't even talk about him anymore. Matt & John also never spoke a word about it. It was like he never happend to be in the Tori Amos Band.

A couple of things:

No way do I believe that he was doing the shit stuff that's been talked about for just a little while before it was suddenly discovered and then they parted ways. They knew one another from way back in the YKTR days, right? My guess is that she was aware of some of the hijinks and looked past them for whatever reason.
Also, it's quite possible they all made an agreement to never say a disparaging thing about one another publicly. And while the title/lyrics are filled with innuendo, that doesn't count.

Teomaderm 08-11-2011 08:23 AM

Fucking love this song, I'd never heard it before!

panholio 08-11-2011 08:28 AM

Yeah, like I said, I think it all happened while she was preggo.

Probably he's been doin' it for years but he never did it with her fans, so there wasn't easy for Tori to know about his sexual practices.
(And then one day he realised that he was getting too old and he wasn't going to get any young girls anymore so he had to convince them with demos and stuff. Ok, I don't know, we're just inventing this, so it's pure fantasy)

SOTW: Not David Bowie

Sorry for the day early post - cannot do this for a day or two and its after midnight where I am so technically I got the right day!

The song:

The lyrics:
Vultures in my garden
Figures that I know them
And it is what it is

You were good once
Now you're filled with bitterness
And it is what it is

I cannot forget that he can't forget
or that some friends just change like the seasons
Take me back to the fact that you're still blaming,
but I am not the reason you are not David Bowie

Now you want to steal the thoughts
that I have been deep in thought
and it is what it is

How 'bout your soulmate pact with the Devil
and needs a date with the surgeon
and it is what it is

I cannot forget that he can't forget
or that some friends just change like the seasons
Take me back to the fact that you're still blaming,
but I am not the reason you are not David Bowie

You forgot to value
what all of us have done for you
and it is what it is

You swore you were concious
not a champagne spiritualist
and it is what it is

I cannot forget that he can't forget
or that some friends just change like the seasons
Take me back to the fact that you're still blaming,
but I am not the reason you are not David Bowie

I cannot believe I am doing this song, its not even in my top 10 and some songs people haven't picked yet (Heart of Gold, Crucify, Toast, Sister Janet,, Riot Poof) I was so tempted to do.

But I just cannot let this oddity slide.

One of the problems with the Beekeeper was the potential of some songs being completely ruined by baby voice, insincerity and/or cheesy production.

Its no surprise that the era's best songs were also her most sincere and came from inside - Toast, Beekeeper, Garlands and Not David Bowie.

I have no muscial vocabulary but I call this song a "baroque diss-song". The song is bold and angry. It has a driving tribal sounding beat with so much reverb/echo and just builds and builds.

And it is clearly about Steve Caton. Bells for Her was about a friendship ending but is sad and ethereal. This is angry and raw - no baby voice in sight.

Steve Caton was the perfect compliment to Tori, he provided my favourite non piano moment from Tori on Doughnut Song. And even when "Mac Aladdin" took over - Steve Caton still inspired the best songs.

P.S. Body and Soul is the poor man's Not David Bowie.

XarokLasa 10-30-2011 05:55 AM

You beat me to it! I was just about to say that Body & Soul reminds me a lot of Not David Bowie.

trilochana.nejman 10-30-2011 10:32 AM

I really like this song and it makes me sad that the two best TBK era songs that we've heard didn't even make the album.

lizadax 10-30-2011 12:41 PM

I fucking love this song! I hardly ever listen to it, but whenever it comes on on shuffle, I have to listen to it at least 5 times in a row. I agree this is obviously about Caton. I hope someday we'll hear a song for Mac Aladdin. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

There's one: it's called For Mark, and it's actually lovely http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/smile.gif

NDB is one of the highlights from A Piano!
