I think it is more prevalent in the rural areas where there are no supermarkets, cinemas, restaurants and banks and the bedrooms and buses don't have aircon!
What would amaze me though, was when I had a colmado, construction workers would come in sweating, ask me to open the fridge and get them a coca cola as they would die if they did it, and then ask for a big cup of ice, pour in the coca cola and drink it straight down! It obviously is only true for cold on the outside and not the inside. matilda |

To keep this DR related, to the best of my knowledge there are no ski hills in the DR. |
Like dv8 and others have said, this is total bull sh!t...nothing else.
I have posted on this at least twice. A lot of this started with the introduction of electricity, and ungrounded house wiring. Forget Finland...think about NYC in the winter and leaving a hot apt, going out into those -15 C. windchill winds, then down into the subway and all those hot sweaty cars, and then back up onto those frozen streets and then into a sweatshop to work 10 hours. And then back home. And there has NEVER, EVER been a report of any Dominican suffering from a " spasmo" in NYC.. Total bull crap...but, hey, I can cure it if you pay met...heh ehe hehe HB |
|
Another funny thread started from a guy who supposedly is 26 years old has more than US$100k in US dollar backed bank accounts in DR but little less than US$1Million dollars worth of Dominican Pesos in DR banks. built his house in La Vega 4 years ago LOL. What does he do for a living? Its probably inherited mommy and daddy money, ex-MLB draft pick, or money from the black market (illegal activities to put it bluntly). Common guys how believable does this seem to be? LOL, many times I've been in hot/cold temperatures or environments had a sudden temperature change and nothing has gone wrong. That is hogwash and total superstition.

My suegra never lived a day in the campo, she was born in La Feria [SD] when it was her parents' farm, and she believed in the whole ironing/fridge thing. I always told my husband I could have written a book based on all her beliefs. Remember the father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and his windex? That was her - with Vicks 'mentol' |
OOOHHH How I love this one.
My wife ( Dominican ) Says the same thing. Yea I'm going to die from going from hot to cold. Open fridge when returning from gym. Ironing another great one. And lets not forget that Dominicans melt in the rain. About seven years ago. My wife and I went to a resort in PP she wanted to go to the casino. I said we have no money to waste on gambling. She said no problem . We can just look around. So nice nite we walked . Left the kid at the room. We walked around some and she asks me for some money . What are you nuts . So she says lets go back to the room. No sooner than we start walking back here comes the rain. A down pour. I NEVER LET GO OF HER HAND The entire way , best walk of my life. We haven't been to a casino since. |
actually there is some truth to it.
here in the dr the rain has so much stuff in it that if you go in the rain when hot you can get grippe and die. so its best to stay in the dry or cool off a little and let your pores close. also matilda, on 'our' boat we disconnected the compressor from the water cooler so that the water was ambient temperature, when the guys took a drink before jumping in, to reduce the risk of spasms in the chest and heart area. sayonora, respect to you, I am trying to learn some of that stuff. It's a minefield. |
Share more myths guys .. here's one that's not a myth but a common phrase in La Vega .. "Si Dios quiere" , almost like they can have no influence on what's going to happen.
It would make sense if more of them were devout churchgoers but the majority aren't. I asked my friend in his last year of medical school if he was going to finish next year, and he says "Si Dios quiere". Hm |

"If I should live until I die..... and I expect I shall....." In English, we say " God willing"...... very often in some circles. This is a VERY normal phrase/saying in many cultures NOT a myth that needs to be "Debunked" |
