I just entered SDQ on 7/20 and was told my tourist card is good for only 30 days...
~That is true, however what is being explained is that you can extend that 30 days for a total of 4 times or a max of 120 days....many expats are having difficulty with this being they usually stay for the entire winter and they would now under the new rules require residency...

~Now the ultimate question is if you stay beyond your extensions!!??...will they deport you??? or will they slap you on the wrist with a fine as they have done in the past with a Tourista Visa???

As I understand the new regulations, the tourist visa is for 60 days and can be renewed once for another 60 days.

This is all getting ridiculous, I thought Caribbean living was supposed to chill people out. Act like a Dominican when dealing with things you don't like or want to hear, pretend it doesn't exist and go about your business, fight it if you have to, if it comes to that, if everyone doesn't acknowledge it then it probably won't exist.
For all the worriers, what exactly is stopping you from handing in your temp residency application yourself. For the cost of doing it (update me on the costs if you do it yourself?) yourself and the cost some of you are contemplating spending running around like headless chickens, surely putting the application in is cheaper, then your set for the time being, whether you need it, want it, use it or not. Even if the application for some crazy reason got knocked bak, you still buy yourself the time you need, which is the immediate future.
am I missing something?

This is not about temporary (or permanent) residency. It is about people that visit the DR and should have no need to apply for residency of any type. Adding residency discussions to this thread only complicates it more. What is talked about here is how long one can stay when you visit the DR. There is still confusion about this and will be for some months to come. How long can I stay, will there still be exit fines, can I renew a tourist card, how long is the tourist card for, etc. etc. How this all works will come out in the coming months. (I do agree that it is probably better to ask for forgiveness and not permission, plead ignorance and such until everything is sorted out. )

I do not want residency...just want to visit. I could never live up to the residency regulation as I will be out of the DR for more than 6 months every year. I would like to stay 5 months or so in the winter and then go home to Canada.

I can just picture it, I overstay, they deport me....I buy a new ticket for another flight, I arrive in POP and they tell me I cannot enter....there is no room on the flight home...where do they put me....so, they drive me to the POP jail until the next flight. Welcome to the new DR LOL

I'm aware of this. My point that this is ridiculous is that these posts are continuously going around and around, it's stupid, no one knows or will know as there is no new regulation in place. A bunch of people asking other people who can not know the answer to a question is a waste of time. Once a regulation is in place then ask, until then I see no point in changing plans, or getting flustered. The embassy doesn't know, immigration doesn't know, so how will DR1 know.
i was mentioning the temp res as people seem strung out over this, if so strung out then just do the temp res app, cheaper, less stressful and clears any probs.
But I've a feeling that's not gunna happen, carry on

I was not aware that with DR RESIDENCY you could not leave the DR for a period longer than 6 months. (its not Citizenship)
I thought once you had a DR RESIDENCY and the Residency Card you could come and go as you please without restricion.

Don't be ridiculous, they are not going to act firm on overstay, there will be a bak door left cracked open for abuse and corrupt purposes, to think otherwise would be silly. Have you considered worrying about this if it ever comes in and you can see what they leave open for you?
i can see I'm in the minority in my thoughts about this, so I'll le you guys fluster over it, I'll spectate from the sidelines.

DR1's own lawyer posted the new regulations. That is why these threads exist. There are regulations, it is just that the government employees are not aware of them. That should come as no surprise to any of us that live here. And that is the reason for the current confusion.

Residency is not going to "clear any probs" for people who are not able to be residents here since they will not spend at least 6 months here each year. To keep residency you have to spend at least 6 months of the year in the DR.

Really? I remember reading an outline, and it was unsure how it would pan out. Did Guzman not even state, he wasn't sure what would come of it? Also was it not set for June 1st? Seems up to now it fell at the first fence and hasn't gotten to its feet. Just saying

I was kidding.....

I am amazed they have not thought of visitors like me but I am under no illusions that there will always be a way with a little grease.

Just paid my tourist visa overstay fee at Dept. Immigration in SD with out any hastle.
1500 pesos for the past year.

To clarify the old system is still in place, so basicly you can stay as long as you want and you
have to pay the overstay fees as I listed previously when you exit the country or as I did at the Dept. of Immi.

I think all is safe till the 16th of August when the new Government is brought in.
Who knows what will happen at that point, roll the dice...

I played it safe and paid mine off now, as I will be leaving in October and didnt want any nasty suprises.

What did this do as far as future in DR? Does paying it give you another 30? or 60? days?

I think he just paid his overstay tax/fine.

Can people understand the regs are not changed! At this point it is business as usual.

I understand the regulations haven't changed yet. My question is does this start the clock again, like getting a new tourist card?

I have never heard of anyone paying an overstay fee before they leave, so I dunno how that will turn around and I personally wouldn't trust it not to have to be paid again when he actually does leave in Oct. You pay your fee/tax passport gets stamped and off you go, I don't recall any paperwork changing hands at that point no, tell me if I'm wrong? So I don't understand this process, seems weird no, and new to me It might have had a change since I last paid a legit exit tax.

Currently the system is simple. You pay for a 30 day tourist visa on arrival and if you stay longer than that you just have to pay the overstay fee apon depature.

Yes interms of the "overstay fee" the clock starts again.
