The first time I heard of Capoeira was when I was about 12 and a friend and I watched a movie called "Only the Strong". Definitely an interesting Martial Art, and good to see there are classes in DR. Will check out them out in Cabarete.

I was big into Capoeria back in late 80's. Helped start the first group in the UK and trained for a year in Brazil.

I trained under Mestre Gato one of the founding members of Grupo Senzala and one the "Golden Berimbau" twice. The Golden Berimbau competition was eventually banned due to fighters getting killed.

Great times, I stil get goose bumps 20 yrs later
So you are a precursor, it's a "mysterious" art now, in the late 80"s it was even more unusual. I used to train in the late 90"s, now my 8 years old son is the jogador. Como to see a roda, they do one almost every saturday afternoon, they can use your feedback and you will have a good time.

As a matter of fact, I think Axe Capoeira is on of the most "fight oriented" capoeira group.
Two of Mestre Barrao sons, the founder of the group, are involved in the MMA circuit.
I think the younger one, Lelo, who was fighting in a Vancouver based league just got
in the Bellator league.

This is the guy:

This is an overview of the group:

Enjoy !
Yes I know Mestre Barrao and even better his son Marcus Vinicios, and Lelo as well, they have fought for me in a couple Promotional companies I founded back when I lived in Vancouver. Great guys and incredible athletes. This is why I was interested if any Capoeiras are active fighters in the DR.

A few members of the DR based branch of Axe Capoeira are involved in other martial arts, TKD, Muay Thai and BJJ mainly, but as far as I know, except for the group leader Boa Vida, they are not active fighters at this time, but the weekly roda do get a little rough sometimes, nothing too violent. I guess the invest their energy in all the other aspects of the art, the singing and instruments playing. Axe Capoeira has a strong and rich musical side.
