Default The preliminary results of this work
An ideal experiment to understand which of the two forces is more relevant would be to have a totally empty space with different geographical characteristics, in which, for a short period of time, the possibility of people choosing where to settle would be opened. In a recent work, Brown and Cuberes (2020) analyze an episode that offers a scenario close to the one I have just described: the opening, in 1889, of a territory in what is now Oklahoma, of around 8,000 square kilometers practically uninhabited for people from the rest of the country to move to live there. The preliminary results of religious stores nearby this work show that the settlers who arrived in this territory in 1889 chose areas near an old railway and, to a certain extent, near rivers; however, in the following decades it seems that the influence of the initial agglomerations acquires a much greater weight in the explanation of where the immigrants chose to live. In any case, episodes like this are extremely difficult to find3.
