God Thinks

First of all. I have no intention of insulting anyone with this post. If you find it offensive, tell me and I will remove the post, and send a personal apology. The song is obviously controversial, but I also feel its an interesting/profound commentary on world religions and their followers. Its purpose is to open a debate, to hear what other people think of the meaning behind the lyrics. Some of the words are crude, but he uses it as a method to get a point across. The underlying meaning is really neat.

God Thinks
By Voltaire

God thinks all blacks are obsolete farm equipment
God thinks the Jews killed his son and must be punished
God thinks the white man is Satan
God, they know what God thinks

God thinks we should all convert to Judaism
God thinks we must all be Christians and
God thinks we should all embrace Islam
God thinks the only true religion is Hinduism

And I
I know what God thinks
God thinks you're a waste of flesh
God prefers an Atheist

God God
God thinks all people like you are hateful
God thinks all people like you are an embarrassment to creation
self-righteous, judgmental, first to throw a stone
and using His name for your own protection

God thinks the sun revolves around the Earth
God thinks there was something very wrong with Copernicus
God thinks abortion is murder and
God thinks everything that science gave us is wrong
God thinks women deserve it
God thinks AIDS is a form of punishment

I hate people who blame the Devil for their own shortcomings and
I hate people who thank God when things go right

And I
I know what God thinks
God thinks you're an idiot
God prefers a heretic

God God
God thinks all people like you are hateful
God thinks all people like you are an embarrassment to creation
self-righteous, judgmental, first to throw the stone
and using His name for your own agenda

God is a liberal
God is a democrat
God wants you to vote republican
never trust a man who puts his words in the mouth of god
and says it's absolute truth
its lies and it smells like death
its all in a day's work taking money from the poor
Why do you think that God would need your dirty money
if you want to start a holy war?

self-righteous, judgmental, first to throw a stone
and using His name for your own protection

God thinks puppies need to die and
God thinks babies need to drown
'cause God is neither good nor bad
God is you and me
God is Everything

Interesting...I can see why someone would feel insulted but since it is a song...(do you have a link BTW?Never mind...here's one... http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.n...256DAA00255A75 )...we'll leave it and see where it goes.

Please everyone realize that this was posted as a topic of discussion not as an insult to anyone or anyone's beliefs. Please keep an open mind as you read and respond. Thanks, Connie

I do not see why anyone should feel insulted. After all human beings have created God in their image and likeness. http://www.ulctribal.com/forum/images/smilies/happy.gif

"I hate people who blame the Devil for their own shortcomings and
I hate people who thank God when things go right"

I think it is sad that a person could hold so much hate inside. Hating people for what they believe! Sad.

Hate is not a path I wish to travel.

The only thing I agree with of the entire song are the last two lines:

"God is you and me
God is Everything "

But the concept of the words of the song is valid. We should not transfer our responsibilities, strengths and weaknesses on others, not other people nor on some other power.

Nor should we assume that we know all the answers. Hey! Some of the questions have not even been asked yet.

And to hold contempt for anything of the creator's creation is a bit out of line, I think. Are we supposing that we are better than, and know better than the supreme creator?

Ah!!!!!

Peace & Love!

Sounds more like human thought and behavior. You can clearly see the contradictions that the species has made in this thing. Volitare just puts it in song. I do believe that "God" is in everything, but many of the religions mentioned and make up the primary following of many Western and some Eastern beliefs shows human arrogance by thinking only humans were made in "God's" image. You'll get now fowl cry from me.

Poothevokprot 11-11-2007 07:13 PM

I'm unfamiliar with this. It seems the author is young, very angry and laying down some very strong roots that will keep them in one place. It makes a blanket statement not only about belief, but of people. A big blanket.

I understand this kind of anger. It is very difficult to shake and self-perpetuating. Scattershot.

I think I'll go listen to some Black Sabbath.

I really get peeved with those people who think that they know the mind of God/Goddess. She may let humans in on a thought or two but, and I think this is what the song is driving at, noone, no human can know the mind of The One.

PareKeect 11-12-2007 02:34 AM

A BIG blanket. Really hot and itchy.

Butiqueso 11-12-2007 02:50 AM

I find it interesting that most of you see anger in this song. When I listened to it, I felt it took a very humorous approach on how people think their religion is the right one. The song writer brought them together under one song, making everyone who practices equal...even if he thinks their idiots.

The first stanza brings "O Brother Where Art Thou?" to mind. The African American traded his soul for a guitar with the devil, and the film indicates that the devil is the white sheriff. A lot of white men though African Americans were nothing more then farm equipment during the age of slavery, and no doubt they percieved the white as the devil in some light.

I feel what he is singing, is the perspective that many people take. I didn't find it offensive in the least, though my brother did. Which is why I apologized in advance. I understand this song in a different way. Thats one of the neat things about music and art, everyone interprets it differently.

I'm just relieved it didn't offend anyone.

So, if you were to meet this young man, after listening to this song and mulling over these lyrics, what would you say? If you do sense anger here, how would you address it?

ChicasCams 11-12-2007 03:26 AM

The anger I see here isn't mine to address. In terms of the humor... well, finding someone an idiot and singing a song about them is, at best, satire and something I don't see here. I get the feeling I'd have nothing to say that would interest the author.

Kimmitmelvirm 11-12-2007 04:43 AM

~ I'd offer a beer...
It's not so much anger that I see as frustration over all the disagreements & y'know, wars, that are caused in the name of God.
& who's God?
So many people for so many reasons claim God is on their side, that it's their God, that only they know God...
It is often frustrating navigating through a world with so many clutching at & yelling about their 'Truth' & their 'God' as the one & only.
... Thank you Stars!

LeviBrawn 11-12-2007 05:31 AM

Thats the impression I also go Qryos. I feel he is substituting the name God in place of Man (as in mankind). He doesn't seem to be singing about God's perspective at all, but about man's ideas of what God thinks. Which does make an interesting satire.

I agree.

Valid but funny. http://www.ulctribal.com/forum/images/smilies/lol.gif

The day I stopped working was the day I stopped wearing a watch. When I go out in the world (leave my property) I always rely on other people's time. I have none.

Peace & Love!

Well at first I thought it was by Voltaire, but then I realized it was a different Voltaire http://www.ulctribal.com/forum/images/smilies/gleam.gif

I like it. (I stole the idea and made a MySpace bulletin).

They make a lot of good points about people in general, especially those that claim to be "religious".

wvbwxol 11-14-2007 03:10 PM

Lol! Oh no, not myspace! Thats another evil in and of itself. http://www.ulctribal.com/forum/images/smilies/wink1.gif

I think the song is rather clever. And I bet Voltaire (the musician) would be both amused and proud that you thought he was the other Voltaire. No doubt that was half the point in his choosing the name.

I wrote "God Thinks" on my door. Couldn't post the whole song, but that should inspire some mental thought...hopefully. I like to think my fellow college students use their brain every now and then.

DesautocaD 12-11-2007 07:30 AM

I agree with Qryos. The song expresses the frustration I feel. Religious arguments are a cheat. They defy logic and common sense. Anyone can claim, "God says," about anything. It's a shortcut to supreme power and authority. If you can get enough people to say, "God says," you can get them to do all sorts of horrific things.

I found a nice video on YouTube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFt8WQkEvb8

This is also well done, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWntCFUawKA&NR=1

Those are awesome videos, thanks for sharing! I really love this song. If I didn't view it as a satire, I'd probably think it awful. But really, it makes me think, it makes me laugh. And above all, I understand his perspective. http://www.ulctribal.com/forum/images/smilies/happy.gif I also love Coldplay's song...one of my favorites.

Bonioners 12-11-2007 08:14 AM

I felt, and identified with, the frustration in the song. I feel that the author would speak his mind on any topic and could hold a descent(sic) conversation.
