Hi Coffeebeing,
I think also that Chuang Tzu was speaking to the following section of Lao Tzu: Too Much Learning; Too Many Words Much learning means frequent exhaustion; That is not so good as holding on to the mean. By many words is wit exhausted. Rather, therefore, hold to the core. Holding to the core meaning holding to one's inner essence (or spirituality). Words are only words. The idea of communications is to transfer thoughts and concepts. Once the thoughts and concepts are understood, the words can be forgotten. It is my understanding that the one who teaches without words is the one who teaches by example. Teaching by example requires very few, if any, words. Also, there is much we can learn through intuition. Intuition does not need words. Yes, we do use words in our mind in order to more fully understand the intuitive inspirations but they too, once the inspiration is fully understood, can be forgotten. Only when we wish to share these inspirations do we again need words. But again, the words will soon be forgotten but the inspiration may well live forever. Peace & Love! |

A quote from Chuang-Tsu has been bouncing around in my bean today:
The purpose of a fishtrap is to catch fish, and when the fish are caught, the trap is forgotten. The purpose of a rabbit snare is to catch rabbits. When the rabbits are caught, the snare is forgotten. The purpose of words is to convey ideas. When the ideas are grasped, the words are forgotten. Where can I find a man who has forgotten words? He is the one I would like meet. |
