First Jewish Commons Speaker: UK
is he a dhimmi like Miliband?
|
I read that he used to be a real Merchant Banker but he seems quite popular now, best of luck to him. Here's a wee tongue in cheek dedication.

Same one, but with the original video release.

I don't get it.

Bercow was once Secretary of the Immigration and Repatriation Committee for the Tory party's right-wing Monday Club. He left when he was 20 once he realised just how extreme some of the other members were.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservative_Monday_Club He was also a Merchant Banker, but I was referring to the cockney rhyme type of Merchant Banker. If you know what I mean wink wink. |
THE SMEAR ATTEMPT BY DAILY REBEL er RECORD
Sectarian shame of would-be Commons Speaker John Bercow over claims he sang The Sash at Rangers party http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/2009/06...6908-21456828/ Jun 20 2009 By Kevin Schofield A TORY hopeful for the Speaker's post led the singing of sectarian songs at a Rangers supporters' club, it was claimed last night. A political blogger posted a picture of MP John Bercow, who was favourite to succeed Michael Martin, with flags appearing to bear Ulster Defence Association symbols behind him. Witnesses say it dates back to a meeting of the ultra-right Federation of Conservative Students at the unidentified Rangers club in the late 1980s. And they claim Bercow led the crowd in singing The Sash, as well as songs about IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands. One said last night: "He seemed to know all the words and was singing heartily." Within hours of the picture appearing on the Guido Fawkes blog yesterday, Bercow had been replaced by Labour's Margaret Beckett as favourite to be elected as Speaker. But Scottish Labour MPs said it would not stop them voting for him. Despite his past as chairman of the FCS - banned by Tory hardliner Norman Tebbit for being too right-win- Bercow is now to the left of the Conservative Party. He is also known to be unpopular among his Conservative colleagues. And some Labour members suggested the picture may have been unearthed as part of aTory plot to stop him winning. Paisley and Renfrewshire North MP Jim Sheridan said: "There has been a concerted campaign by the Tories to stop him being elected. "He was a bit of a right-winger in the past but I've always found him to be a very decent guy. He might have a bit of a chequered history but he's not like that now." Another Labour MP added: "I don't think there's any doubt this has been put up to stop Bercow becoming Speaker. However, I don''t think it will have any impact on how MPs vote. "I know it certainly wouldn't stop me voting for him." Bercow, who represents Buckingham and stood unsuccessfully as Conservative candidate in Motherwell South in 1987, was not available for comment last night. Ladbrokes spokesman Robin Hutchison said: "Bercow has been drumming up support since Michael Martin announced he was stepping down. "But his chances now appear to have gone for a walk." THE FAMINE SONG IS RACIST RULE JUDGES The Famine Song is racist, three appeal court judges ruled yesterday. And they rejected a legal challenge against a Rangers fan's conviction for racially and religiously aggravated breach of the peace. William Walls, 20, repeatedly shouted "Fenian b*******"and sang the Famine Song during the Ibrox side's game at Kilmarnock last November. Walls,of Craigend,Glasgow, was put on probation for 18 months and given two-year football banning order at Kilmarnock Sheriff Court. His lawyer Donald Findlay QC, had argued the Famine Song, which contains the chorus "the famine is over, why don't you go home", was an expression of politi-caopinion and free speech. But Lord Carloway threw out the appeal, describing the lyrics as "racist" as they called upon people native to Scotland to leave the country because of their racial origins. ================================================== ============== THE SASH IS SECTARIAN LIE EXPOSED AS RUBBISH BY THE COURTS The Sash, possibly the most famous Loyalist song, was found to be non-sectarian by Scottish courts in October 2004. Hamilton teenager Barry Longmire was acquitted of breaking section 74 of the Criminal Justice Scotland Act 2003, after singing Loyalist songs outside a police station. Section 74 gives police the powers to arrest people for offences aggravated by religious prejudice. His solicitor told the court: The Sash is a folk song of family bonds in the Orange tradition. Its words are not offensive to anyone. [quoteTHE SASH Sure I'm an Ulster Orangeman, From Erin's Isle I came, To see my Scottish brethren All of honour and of fame, And to tell them of my forefathers Who fought in days of yore, That I might have the right to wear, The sash my father wore! Chorus: It is old, but it is beautiful, And its colors they are fine It was worn at Derry, Aughrim, Enniskillen and the Boyne. My father wore it as a youth In bygone days of yore And on the Twelfth I love to wear The sash my father wore. Now here I am in Glasgow town You Girls and boys tae see, and I know in guid auld Orange style that yous all would welcome me, A True Blue blade thats just arrived fae that guid auld Ulster shore, all on the twelfth day of July in the Sash my faither wore Chorus: And now I have tae lave yous all guid luck till yous ill say, and as I cross the ragin foam my Orange flute i'll play, I'm returnin tae ma native land to Ulsters rocky shore, to be welcomed hame by Orangemen in the Sash my faither wore: Chorus:[/quote] ================================================== ============= THE NET RESULT OF THE DAILY REBEL er RECORDS SMEAR ATTEMPT John Bercow elected as House of Commons Speaker Candidate for Speaker of the Commons, John Bercow, outside the House of Commons ahead of today's vote http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/new...cle6556617.ece (Fiona Hanson/PA) John Bercow won the election for Speaker tonight Sam Coates, Chief Political Correspondent http://www.timesonline.co.uk/multime...ow_577437a.jpg John Bercow has been elected Speaker of the House of Commons after defeating Sir George Young in the final vote tonight. The MP for Buckingham defeated his Tory rival by 322 votes to Sir George s 271. The duo were left to fight it out after eight other candidates either dropped out or were eliminated in two rounds of voting. Mr Bercow topped the second ballot, boosting his support from 179 to 221. However, North West Hampshire MP Sir George kept himself in the contest by racking up 62 extra backers to reach 174. Among those to drop out was Margaret Beckett, the former Foreign Secretary, who had been favourite to win the contest, and many of her votes were thought to have gone to Mr Bercow. Another was Ann Widdecombe, who hoped to do the job until her retirement at the next election, and who was eliminated with just 30 votes. Sir Michael Lord came bottom with just nine votes, three less than the number of those who supported him on his nomination paper, while Sir Patrick Cormack (13 votes), Richard Shepherd (15) and Parmjit Dhanda (26) were also forced out. Giving his speech to a packed Commons earlier, Mr Bercow drew laughter as he joked about his bid to become Speaker at the relatively young age of 46. He pledged to stay in place for a maximum of nine years if elected and described himself as the clean-break candidate, who was ready and willing to bring about change. Speaking without notes, Mr Bercow said: I want to implement an agenda for reform, for renewal, for revitalisation and for the re-assertion of the core values of this great institution in the context of the 21st century. Sir George had used his speech to announce a series of ideas for reform which he believed would reconnect the Commons with the public. I want to see a House of Commons that regains its self-confidence, I want a more independent House of Commons, a more effective House of Commons, a more relevant House of Commons and a more accessible House of Commons, he said. I want to see the terms of trade tilted away from the executive, back to Parliament. Mrs Beckett had been tipped to win the contest, and her elimination indicates that a whipping operation led by Nick Brown, the chief whip, had failed. |
