Default Martin Amis: The Rachel Papers
Yes, Charles Highway is an extraordinarily enjoyable character but that?s about it. Everything else is pretty run-of-the mill. The way the story is narrated is unusual enough, but the writer clearly does not have the chops to do a great job of this yet, so what could be innovative falls flat and is merely amusing. That is quite enough for a book, however. The Rachel Papers is no masterpiece, but I enjoyed it every bit of the way. s*: Posh Spice: Martin Amis’s “The Rachel Papers”

I think I generally agree with your review of The Rachel Papers. It certainly is intrusive on the part of its author, and many of the criticisms you offer are ones often applied to Amis' work (even by Kingsley!) And yet I, like you, enjoyed it every bit of the way. It's a real young writer's novel; Amis knew he could write and wanted everyone else to know it.

"Snatches that yo-yo between their knees, breasts so flaccid you could tie them in a knot" - ha!

Yep. I believe there is a famous piece of criticism Kingsley is supposed to have hurled at his son's work on that intrusiveness. Can't remember it just now, though.

I have been thinking for sometimes about reading Amis, anybody could give some ideas on where to start?
So far i have only read only few reviews and some interviews he has made, which where mainly directed to the current global political enviroment.

I have been thinking for sometimes about reading Amis, anybody could give some ideas on where to start? I'd say start, and finish, before 2000. The Rachel Papers is a good starting point (it was his), but if you want the best, IMHO London Fields is hard to beat. (I think Time's Arrow overrated, The Information underrated) And tops among the nonfiction, for me, were The Moronic Inferno and Visiting Mrs Nabokov.

...and I'd plump for Money, followed by London Fields. House of Meetings was my first Amis, different but still funny in that dark way, and very poignant in part.

I thought The Information was hilarious but I remember there were parts I didn't like (something about the sun and the moon or something).

The four I have read are so diverse which is one of the things which impresses me about Amis.

I don't think order matters but here's the order I've read so far:

Money
House of Meetings
The Information
Time's Arrow
