Default Jeremias Gotthelf: The Black Spider
You are not allowed to not read that novella, which is among the best books in the German language. I did a amazon.com search just now, out of boredom, and saw that it had indeed been translated, although it's out of print now.

It's a allegorical story of the plague about a black spider that devastates a village, a result of a pact with the devil and another time due to the moral decay. That may sound cheesier than it is. Get it. Honestly. Yr missing out.

I feel I should now point out that it's been given a new lease of life, thanks to OneWorld Classics, as I saw it in Waterstone's yesterday.

Ah. . .I can't wait to read this book. When Mirabell recommends a book to me, I almost always try to get a copy of it. Thanks, Stewart, for the update on The Black Spider. It truly does sound like one very beguiling novella.
