Default Doris Lessing: The Fifth Child
This is an amazing book and its so short that I cannot help but recommend it to EVERYONE. I loved every bit of it, although 'love' might not be the right emotion to describe my feelings about this book. It#s a horror story, yet is depends upon ones reading and immersion what kind of horror it is.

I immediately wanted go buy it for friends and the like
but not sure if it would be a smart idea to give it to a young woman who wants to have a baby soon
I'd shake with every kick the baby makes, if I were her.

an incredible book
so many layers
such a short book
so dense
and yet so very fluently and simply written

very good.

I had to check my shelves to see if I had this. I don't. Instead I have The Grass Is Singing and The Golden Notebook. One of our members, John Self, posted a review of The Fifth Child on his blog, although he didn't seem to keen to read the follow-up, Ben, In The World.

Thank you for the link but 1st I'd disadvice anyone who wants to read the book from reading the review first, there are points which should be, well ,not surprising but one should come upon certain information while reading the novel so as not to destroy the web of ambivalences that is created in the novel and 2nd Mr. Self was IMO both missing an important point at the end of the review and he's wrong about that:
But the ending seems almost randomly placed; It's a perfect end.

That said, I am in no hurry to read the sequel as it seems, by what I heard, to've changed the characters beyond recognition, stripped the story of ambivalence etc.

bah.
