For those who speak Spanish there was a very interesting article about immigration in yesterday's colour supplement to Información. With over 4,3 million immigrants we account for almost exactly 10% of the Spanish population and the conclusion of the article is that any racism or xenophobia is caused by lack of knowledge or understanding of us immigrants. There is also a high level of fear.............not, perhaps surprisingly, about crime or "taking our jobs" but about changing Spanish culture.
I loved this..........34,3% of all Spanish have never had any contact with any immigrant. I guess they did not come to Alicante province!! Steve PS On Saturday, the front page article stated that 50% of the population is concentrated on just 5% of the land mass! They continued that more than 40% live in the 12 towns/cities with more than 50,000 residents. Hopelessly out of date figures but Torrevieja had the biggest rise in the 1980 -2001 period with an additional 38,632 residents ON THE PADRÓN whilst inland towns like Alcoy(by over 8,000), Elda and dozens of towns in the Valencia and Castellón provinces reduced (!!!) in size. The fastest growing tom last century? According to the BBVA it was San Isidro which grew from 39 to 1301 censados. Pilar de la Horadada was not far behind 416 to 12,315 Santa Pola grew from 4,201 to 15,581. However, I am sure that with more up-to-date figures the percentage gain would be much greater. But this "nuevo factor social" - (" la fuerte presencia de inmigrantes") make our homes along the coastal strip. I suppose somebody at the BBVA has been paid thousands to work that out LOL! PPS Another poll appears to say the opposite about crime. So there we have it "lies, damned lies and statistics" http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp...35&sec=apworld |
