I don't have HBO so I haven't been able to watch the tv series, but I'm about 80% of the way through the second book (the series has been amazing so far.) The only negative thing I have to say about it(and this is a personal gripe):

Spoiler: The parts involving Deanerys(a thirteen/fourteen year old girl) having sex/being pregnant make me slightly uncomfortable. Also for some strange reason I always seem to get to those parts while I'm reading the book in public, which just makes things awkard when people ask me what I'm reading lol.

I'm hoping to pick up the first season on DVD soon as I've heard nothing but fantastic things about it.

Yea, that is one of the things I mention when people ask the difference between the book and the movie, how they subtly age some of the underaged characters. Also, consider that back in the feudal ages it was common for a girl to get married as soon as she entered puberty.

spoiler regarding the end of the second book:
Spoiler: One thing I was surprised about was that they did not kill off a main "good guy" character at the end of the second book. That was such a powerful moment in the first book; I thought for sure they would follow the pattern and silence on of the main narrative perspectives near the end of each volume.

I feel like that could be that could be a good thing though, if the plot device becomes predictable then it loses it's effect.

I absolutely loved every book. Though book 5's ending pissed me off.

Spoiler: I swear to god if Jon is actually dead I'm going to RAGE. He is my FAVORITE character, and a god damn bad ass.

I am not sure what we should talk about here. I really want to discuss the show and/or books, but it would basically be a thread full of spoiler tags.

no spoilers past the end of season2

the scene with denerys in the warlock tower was much better in the books, was a bit annoying since that scene is what her entire character was building up for in book2/season2

In the book Rob marries the random gurl before he finds out about the winterfall being captured by theon. In the show he knows winterfall has fallen before he marries Talisa. That is about a million times more stupid because he knows he is going to have to cross the twins again soon to get back to winterfall. It makes much more sense how it happened in the book (on a whim, early in the campaign) instead of how it happened in the show (drawn out and done even though it should not happen)

I started watching the series and am all caught up. It's a fantastic show. I'll consider picking up the books in the future. How many are in the series?

Depends on how you count

GRRM put out the first 3 at a decent rate (1996, 1999, 2000)
When book 4 came out in 2005 GRRM claimed that it was actually just the first half of book 4 and the second half was mostly written (kind of how book 3 is mostly a continuation of book 2)
Then book 4, part 2 (or book 5) came out 2011

GRRM has said that he wanted to transition this story to the TV screen so now that he has what he said he wanted hopefully he will get his ass in gear and write moar GoT. He said he wants to make a lot of cashmonies and he knows that interest in this series will never be higher than while the show is airing on HBO. I am sure Charlene Harris has been making stupid amounts of money by releasing a new Sookie book every year right before the new season of True Blood premiers.

Yes. they are great. My only complaint is that the plotlines start bleeding from one book to the next. The first book worked great, it was Ned's story. Second book worked great, it was the king's war. From there on (as far as I have gotten) it is just the natural progression of the existing plotlines with big "omg" moments thrown in. The plotlines are good and the stories are progressing so all is awesome but IMO at least there is not the same feeling as the first two books/seasons that each book is telling a specific part of the overall story.
