Default Iranian ayatollahs sanctioning good old temple whores: Mutah - fixed-term marrage
Its not an entirely unknown concept in Islam. I Dont see how this is any worse than western prostitution

16 seems like a reasonable age of consent to me. 14 is pushing it.

There is a significant of a difference between a father/etc marrying his daughter off to someone who will provide for them/etc at 14/etc versus getting 150$ for a night.

Which mostly won't even go to the girl, likely.

They have produced people who are in happy relationships for 1000s of years.

I am definitely in favor of picking your mate, but I don't consider arranged marriages sick by default.

And in societies where women need looked after, I can see them as very reasonable. Marriages in such societies are less about love and more about being provided for. If the woman is picking based on love, she is being a fool (in such societies).

I think I remember reading that arranged marriages have a similar percentage who say they are in love after 20 years as marriages done the way we do in the west.

Girls that engage in a mutah, which is a short term marriage of only some hours/days, are in a VERY bad position when they are trying to marry "for real". She has lost all value in the marriage market. For a girl in a traditional culture, that is serious business...
This was my point, really.

It basically takes away her future material security, in a 'traditional' culture.

I can't really think of any cases where it would be in her best interests. If she was starving it would be better for her to marry for real. That would at least provide her a future.

I meant the forced kind of arranged marriage, it for some reason did not occur to me that there was another kind.

"the west does it too, evil west"

yes, government arranges legal and culturally widespread-accepted prostitution houses where you can "marry" girls for one night for certain amount of money. yes, you can "marry" girls for 1 night who are even less than 14 years old if their fathers agree. brilliant.

While the Iranian theocracy is vile, prostitution is a fact of life in Iran. In poor neighborhoods women - often opium or heroin addicts, another big social issue (the closeness to Afghanistan does this) - offer their services on the streets. Decked out in full Islamic dress of course.

As it is now at least the girls/women have a minimum social protection as it bestows on them some kind of status and allows them to operate within the law. If the 'temporary marriage' provisions were expanded, with mandatory health checks and so on that would obviously be much better. While far from ideal there is an opening here for reform of sexual relations within Islam.

It would be interesting to know how common marriage of very young girls actually are in Iran, as opposed to theoretically. Average age of (first) marriage was 27.7 for men, 23.9 for women (2004) according to,

.... But I don't see arranged marriage as 100% wrong, as long as the couple have a choice. Some cultures have that. Now, forced marriages is something entirely else.
....
I agree...
there is nothing wrong with arranged marriages as long as both have the option to say "No" without getting beaten, killed or worse for this decision (and of course as long as they are given the chance to meet in private before making this decision).

I wonder btw. what other muslim nations think of the iranian "prostitution marriages".

(and I wonder what happens to the girls after their contract ended. After all they aren´t virgins anymore and might have a bad reputation from working as prostitutes, so I doubt there would be too many respectable muslim men, who would take them as main wife. All in all it sounds like the only women who would apply for this 2 year contract will be either dumb, desperate, or forced (by their family/fathers))

Apart from the young age, it's pathatic because it's terribly hypocrite.
It's just prostitution, using a whole in Allah's laws. What are they going to say to Allah when they have to face him? "Sorry dude, we found a whole in your laws, what we did was perfectly legal according to your legislature. Sorry man, next time make some better laws."

And this hypocrite religion condemns the west for it's liberal atmosphere, and many of it's followers call western women whores because they reveal to much skin on the beach. (or just in daily life).

What's next, are they going to allow all adultery, as long as a condom is being used, because a condom ensures that there's no real contact between both bodies, so factually there's no sex. There is just a penis and a vagine close to each other, with some stuff in between. That's what can happen in a busy subway as well.

This is really something I would have expected from the RCC. Of course using little boys instead.

Only a hundred bucks for having a stranger break your seal of freshness? Cheap bastards.

Oh, and yes, the RCC-boy-diddling meme is long dead. No, I'm not Catholic, it's just played out.

Has anyone made a lame joke about the misspelling in the thread title yet? If not, I will: How can someone be marred only for a fixed term? Yuk yuk.
