Yeah honestly I can't fully agree with the OP. Having worked for At&t and TDS, I know that pretty much all the companies are the same. Depending on the capacity in the area, the age of your lines, the condition of your lines, your inside wiring, and the weather, you're going to get either good service, bad service, or terrible service. It's so random that you can't really blame the entire company for it. I had Time Warner in Milwaukee several times and had absolutely outstanding 25 Meg service. On the contrary, I've had horrible service from TDS, Charter, etc, and I've heard horror stories on just about all sides of the fence.

If you're service is bad, pester the support until they get a tech out there to have a looksee. Some will do a crappy job but eventually your case files will start adding up and the LFOs will start using their HTTs to actually take a good look at your line and see where the problems are. On your part, clean up any messy wiring, make sure all your coax is RG-6 Quad Shielded (unless you're not using coax), and you could even try buying a third party cable modem (I've heard the $75 Linksys model is quite good). Unfortunately with cable you also have the issue of broadband sharing, so it may just be that more people in your neighborhood / complex all have cable and now your service is going to suck teh balls as a result.

Good Luck Mate

Default tired of roadrunner and their BS!
I have had time warner road runner internet for about 7 years now, and have always been happy with it. I have always gotten speeds higher than what was advertised up until about 4 months ago. about a year ago I upgraded to their 10M connection with turbo boost or whatever they call their thing that provides a short time boost in speed when needed. When I first got the 10M connection I would average around 17M on most speed tests and would download speeds of around 2mbps from a good server. recently I am getting around 4M on download tests and rarely see downloads go over 400 KB/s.

I finally got fed up after months of things not getting better and called time warner last night to complain. after getting bounced around from person to person about 4 times and being on hold for a total of about an hour. I get a response of there is a possible outage reported in my area with no estimated time frame for being fixed. big help.

So then I go online and do their live tech support chat. after my problem being escalated to a higher level tech a few times I have another person tell me that there may be an outage in my area, and give it a few days and see if it clears up. I remind them that this problem has been going on for about 4 months now and is occasionally so bad that netflix kicks me off with a message saying my internet connection is not sufficient to stream movies, and vids on youtube and hulu are unwatchable due to constant pauses. at this point I get the same response from the phone call about possible outage with no estimated time frame, where not 3 minutes before it was wait a few days and it should clear up.

I finally called them today and spent about 45 minutes on hold and dropped my speed down to the 7M connection. Now I am getting speeds ranging from 5M to 9M on speedtest and average downloads on large files is around 600KB/s. odd that I drop a tier in speed and suddenly I am getting almost what I was paying for beforehand. I went ahead and agreed to their price lock 2 year contract thing, since they gave me a bundle price with dropped it another $25 under what I would have been paying for the 7M connection and almost $40 less than the 10M with turbo connection. the early termination fee is $100 max and decreases every month, and I figure there is nothing else in my area that currently provides better cable or internet than them so why not lock in for 2 years. Saving almost $40 a month makes it worth it if I decide to cancel. And the only thing I can see changing for would be Fios and from what I can make out they have no plans to bring that to my area any time in the near future.

Sorry about the long rant, I just feel like I am getting screwed by them because they know there is nothing else better in my area.

Well I'm kind of annoyed by the because my 'turbo' tier only gets 768k upload, where other areas get 1mbps on their standard tier. Where's my docsis 3 TW?

Finally.... the mischevious coyote has someone to relate with.

Anyways RR has always always sucked. Time Warner is always behind on their networks. Rochester NY still only has a "blistering" 10MB service.... with a cap.

turbo tier here provides an amazing 512kb upload which usually was closer to 384k. the 7M I dropped to is 256k up and I am getting around 300k. And to top it all off I went today to get a new dvr, as my inlaws had a 32inch sony 1080p tv still in a box since christmas they more or less let us have until they find somewhere to put it (want it for their bathroom after they remodel). They gave me one of the shiny new cisco units with an ethernet port and a bunch of other upgrades over the older 8300hd I have in the living room now. I got home and hooked it up to find I have a dead unit. called tech support and they said they can see the box, but they arent getting any reply from it. have to swap it out. wouldnt be so bad if the update they sent out earlier in the year didnt kill 2 boxes in a row that I had to swap already. atleast this one I didnt get into weeks worth of stuff on the dvr to watch that got lost and having to redo all the scheduled recordings like with the other boxes. then to top off my day (started at 6am after finally getting to sleep around 3) work called today and said they are slammed and need me to come in and work for the rest of the week even though I am supposed to be off with my newborn. I agreed if I could stay in town, then they say they need me out of town on a job cause nobody else knows what to do other than the 1 guy they have there already. Its hard to say no with the job market the way it is these days, and the fact I have already used all my vacation and personal days and they were just letting me off because they are good people who understand what its like with kids. So we spent the rest of the day trying to arrange for people to come different days to stay with my wife since she is more or less on light duty only orders from the doctor. no cooking, driving, or walking unless necessary. Now I have to go to the mall on saturday to the time warner store and stand in line all day to return the box because the other store I usually go to is closed and the soonest time for a tech to come out and swap it was 2 weeks. yeah, but it is africa... one must expect those speeds unfortunately at this point. Considering NY state is the third richest state in the US and on it's own it would be ranked 16th wealthiest nation. It is embarrassing those speeds the top. I can get 25/10 here, which while better than where he is, is still far behind where it should be.

problem was that I was paying for 10M and on average getting about half that. If I wanted a 5M connection I could save money by dropping tiers, which is what I ended up doing. This is honestly the first time since I have had a broadband connection (10+ years) that I have not gotten atleast the advertised speed, and generally got more. I think that time warner has to be getting nervous knowing that Fios is encroaching on them fairly fast in populated areas, offering twice the download speed and 10x the upload speed for less money per month. hell even a good 4g wireless connection under perfect conditions is theoretically faster and cheaper than what I am getting from them right now. I just dont feel like I can rely on a 4G connection at my house for streaming movies. they either need to update their infrastructure fast or have a major pricing change or they are going to lose a lot of business when something better does come along, and it will come.

I recently attended a continuing ed seminar for work and one fo the sessions was on 4G deployment and that some companies starting to offer fiber internet and crazy speeds to your house for free in exchange for setting up a small hotspot/repeater on your property. basically your capped on speed during high data, but during low times get something in the range of 50M into your house. They are claiming most of the data going through your hub will be upstream which the average user doesnt use much of, so in theory it shouldnt affect you all that much. not sure if it will work out that way or not, but others are looking to the future while it seems time warner is sitting on their current infrastructure like a pig going to slaughter.
