Isn´t he living in america,
where, compared to europe, they have it the other way round,
with protestants usually being the religious fundamentalists
whereas catholics are those who have a more sane approach to religion?

Technically, I've had 4 already.

I was baptised an Anglican.

After I was 7 my folks stopped going. I don't think I was ever an 'atheist' per se, but I was an agnostic. I believed in the perfect clockmaker, that he winded it up and then let the universe go.

I converted to the Mennonite church after my first year of university in 2000, and then about 5 years later, in 2005, I became Catholic.
