Default Donald Frey, mastermind of the original Ford Mustang, dies at 86
Everyone gives Lee Iaccoca the credit for the original 'Stang but behind the scenes it was Donald Frey who turned a mess of Ford parts-bin components into one of the most iconic--maybe the most iconic--and enduring cars in American automotive history. He was something of an engineering wizard, and it turns out he had his share of accomplishments in life, but you have to think that spearheading the Mustang project--a car that sold a million units in its first two years of production--was something of a crowning achievement. According to this NYT obituary he was "besieged by autograph hunters" in the Mustang's early years...it's a wonder he's not often mentioned alongside American automotive icons like Iaccoca, Harley Earl, and Zora Arkus-Duntov (of Corvette fame). Anyway, thanks Mr. Frey, you will be missed!
