Default Subwoofer damage computer components?
Basically i have my subwoofer behind my laptop quite close as this is the only place i can really put it in my room. I had a laptop that was in use 24/7 for about 2 years and the hard drive on that failed not long after i moved into my dorms and set up my subwoofer behind it. Is it possible that is what broke it as i read that they give off a magnetic field etc?
The laptop was quite vigorously used so the only alternative was that over-use killed it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated before i get a new laptop.

Thanks Guys!

I doubt it was the magnet, but vibration can kill a hard drive in no time.

Is the subwoofer heavy?

Because that weight would be the GIANT ******* MAGNET that's in it!

??? are you serious?

Sure thing the magnet CAN damage computer components.
Magnets erase and do a lot of wacky things to hard drives.

What do you mean?
it doesn't vibrate on its own ?

Just keep it about 12 inches / 30 cm away from it and it should be fine.

That's the distance listed on Logitech's z5500 subwoofer and I'm sure your subwoofer is more shielded than that.

Subwoofer = sound = vibration, which the last time I checked, isn't good for a hard drive. A failed drive (stopped working), and a drive that had its data wiped out are caused by different things. He did say that the disk failed, not that his data had been corrupted or wiped out.
Vibration is very bad for electronic components. That's why in a car audio setup, most people don't put their amp directly onto the box unless the amp is on a part that is reinforced from flexing easily, and even then it isn't ideal.

If it's sitting behind his laptop, chances are it's not all that powerful a sub.

HDD's are pretty resilient to external magnetic fields. The chances that a proper subwoofer damaging a HDD with just its magnet is slim much less a small multimedia one. I wouldn't worry about positioning unless it's vibrating the table a lot.

You will find that HDDs are pretty well shielded, its most likely the vibrations.

Laptop HDDs are designed to withstand vibrations too so it's probably just coincidence.

Never have any speakers or subwoofers or anything with Magnets in near your PC or Laptop or TV / Monitor unless the speakers are Sheilded! it's common sense.

what these dill nuts failed to realize at the time is that stuff like this is shielded for use with PC's....

the fact that he left his laptop on for 2 years in a machine that's inherently hot running and these drives were never designed to be used as 24/7 servers

I's say you are safe

and my Sub is right next to my PC in fact its only about an inch away
