Given that there are about a million Iraq & Afghanistan war vets around and have been for a few years (let's say 2, to be generous to your side of this) this gives a murder commission rate of 6 per 100 000 per annum. Slightly higher than the US average (~5 per 100 000 per annum) but actually fairly low once you include stuff like age and gender (the veterans will be disproportionately male, all will be adults, and most will be under 35).
How is this even a story? |

It was painful reading this article and not being able to post this in response. How is this even a story? Because it fits the theme that US soldiers are brutal bloodthirsty babykillers. |

No offense Ben, but KH isn't any kind of oracle - he can without any problem be an idiot - he occationally proves such, though he will probably deny such. His post gives the information sorely lacking in the article that soldiers are less likely as a percentage of the population to kill people then civilians of the same age and sex. The article only looks at the gross number of soldiers responsible without this critical commentary necessary to reach the conclusions they draw.
I'm not sure what argument you have against his point other then labelling him an 'idiot' which is not very compelling to me. |

Well, I'm both drunk and have english as my second language, so I think that my insults still are legitimate Insults regarding intelligence are usually taken more seriously when not provided by a drunk. |

Whatever you guys have to carry on about is pointless. KH is, KH.
The matter at hand is that some soldiers were in **** situations and are having trouble adapting back home. I know plenty of soldiers who were paranoid, sketchy, afraid of large areas now, etc. PTSD, and more names can cover this. They ****ed up, they ****ed up bad, by committing murder. BUT in their defense, they didn't recieve proper treatment. Units do not always supply soldiers a proper support channel to receive help. I saw my psych once when we got back, and it wasn't for another 4 months before I was able to go again. Why? Work, plain and simple. I had a job to do and my bosses didn't want to give us time off to get checked out. Then I got diagnosed with PTSD, after I had sunk into a crap hole of insomnia. I slept very little, very seldom. |

Well, KH compares numbers to ordinary, and that is stupid - even KH should know this You disappeared after I pressed you for an explanation of why my comments in the other thread were so obviously stupid. Going to pull the same bullshit here? Returning soldiers are not particularly violent, at least not by the measure of homicide commission. This is an extremely important comparison to make, as it gives the lie to the inference made by both the article posted as well as the individual who posted it. Twit. |

I really wish there was somebody left who could at least make it difficult. However, in this particular case, you is right. By selecting a small enough sample size anyone can cause alarm bells to seem to ring. However, Americans seem to understand very little about statistics, sample sizes, and relevant conclusions. In this case, the soldiers are the ones getting the bad rap. ![]() |
