Default Are single-malt whiskey snobs supersad haughty people, or are they on to something?
If you go to http://games.espn.go.com/frontpage/baseball you will see another Koolaid reference of the druggie sort

snoops:
Do you prefer Bourbon? You seem to have a knack for liking things from the SOUTH.

BTW I'm on Beer 11 right now so spelling is suffering.

Speaking of which I need to go back to Ayr to visit the family. I haven't been there since 2000.

How is ESPN from the south? Unless your idea of the south is Connecticut?

And yes, adding ice weakens the flavor of the whiskey, so obviously it should be looked down upon!

Are you perpetually on your 11th beer?

In the whiskey family at least, one test of how good any particular booze is would be how much you enjoy drinking it straight. In that test, in my (rather considerable) experience, single malts outshine all but the very best blended whiskeys. I think one can acknowledge that and not be a scotch snob; in fact, I prefer neat bourbon, blended Irish whiskey, and Tennesee sipping whiskey to single malts scotches, but I still see the argument in their favor.

Sure. Single malt scotches can be incredibly complex; -Jrabbit's comparison to wine is a good one. It's certainly possible to appreciate complexity and still not have it be "your thing"; I appreciate the complexity of chess and Mozart, but still prefer poker and Duke Ellington. But, yeah, that leads to scotch snobbiness in some, which is silly.

I'm new to scotch, and I've only had one blended kind (Dewar's). It was okay, not as good as Oban or Glenfiddich. I don't know whether that signifies anything on a larger scale. Probably not; it was also a hundred times better than Glenlivet and about a thousand times better than the crappy scotch I first tasted at a party.

I sip my single-malt scotch out of a coffee cup in my very messy room (probably with the smell of dirty clothes) while playing EVE or other video games.

(well, I haven't done so recently, but when I did...)

Why would I pay a lot more for something I'm not sure if I'd like?

Plus I'm not sure Soviet Ontario carrys Black Label at my local store.

And thank you for illustrating the concept of supersad, doucehbaggery surrounding the whiskey drinking community.

It's not all about Scotch. Some very good Irish whiskys too, whether single malts or blends.

Dunno if you've tried any of the peaty whiskys. For irish try Connemara Single malt peated and for Scotch Laphroaig is a good one to try. Very smokey and peaty so it's not to everyone's taste. I would try in a bar rather than with a whole bottle to start.

I also quite like Jamesons, which is just a very common mass production blend. The 12 year old much better than the standard, but if I'm gonna have a cheap blended I'd get Jamesons rather than a Scotch.

There's also some very good stuff made in the US but someone US based is probably better placed to make recommendations there.
