Gov. Palin is for abstinence only education, right?

If that's her position on it, fair enough. Are there conflicting quotes? I thought there were, but admittedly I didn't care enough to do much checking.

Or did she become ok with condoms to convince people she wasn't a total wingnut fundie in order to get elected in '06?

I'm thinking being more moderate on social issues isn't exactly something that would help her get elected in a state like Alaska.

It also occurs to me that her precise definition of "explicit" matters here.

This part is entirely fine:

I'm pro-contraception, and I think kids who may not hear about it at home should hear about it in other avenues. So I am not anti-contraception. But, yeah, abstinence is another alternative that should be discussed with kids. and in fact matches my views to a T.

and it is actually what any sane person would think, but sanity is usually punished hard in politics (edit: comment on previous post)

mr.memo 09-10-2008 03:37 PM

There's also the "relatively benign" description of condoms. Sounds like it was painful for her to say.

The church doesn't tell you what you can or can't do or believe. Not like it works all that well, if the Catholics I know are any guide... http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Not quite "porn", because of the stylistic differences (you know how porn movies typically are) yet also quite unapologetic. The next year the movie was gone, I suspect due complaints by parents. I may have witnessed the apex of liberal education.

Well, given that her 17 year old daughter is pregnant, I think her record on Sex Ed. isn't terribly good. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...smilies/hm.gif

The thing to take away from the OP is that Palin says different things to different people. She tell one group one thing then a month later she'll tell another group the exact opposite.

Most teenage moms can't read past the fourth grade level, so you're being quite presumptuous. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/mad.gif

There was an original Star Trek episode about something like that. Fundies may be crazy, but that doesn't necessarily make them stupid - some of them have figured out how to play the game, and play it well.

Whatever. I'm not voting for McCain either way.

So even though we're talking about a reasonably typical red neck family here, that's still a generalization that might not be true in this case. Yeah, but politicians are willing to accept that kind of thing if it achieves there ends. It would take a pretty principled politician to say "Hey, we're not going to play that game". So, basically, when hell freezes over...
