Default CanPol - You won't hear Tories on the news
Anything's better than the Pizza Pizza jingle they play now.

I don't see what the big deal is. If they want to raise money through private donation to run ads, why would you stop them?

If they used public money to do this, I'd be pissed. But I don't see it as any different then using private money to air radio and TV ads, or print newspaper ads?

Anything to ensure Dion doesn't ever get to be PM.

You're inundated with ads already at these gas station. Pizza Pizza jingles, commercials about going on a vacation, etc.

If your problem is with gas stations having advertising, why is this a CanPol thread?

If your problem is with gas stations having advertising, why is this a CanPol thread? I find it more than hilarious that a political party afraid of being heard is going to place ads at gas stations. It makes sense as they still won't have to answer any questions from nosy citizens and media.

As to your fear of Dion - I think Dion is a 1st class idiot but I also feel Harper has to go. One doesn't outweigh the other.

I don't have time to hang out in Ottawa to keep track of what the gov is up to. In a democracy we count on the media for that. If a PM won't trust his own Cabinet Ministers to talk to media w/o making complete asses of themselves, why should I trust them to govern the country.

It's not just Star and Globe. This gov is afraid of 90% of the media in this country. If you truly think the coverage is biased then it's unclear to me how continuing to snub them makes the problem better. I guess the Cons would rather get their message out via gas stations.

There is a good reason why this government is making no gains despite the Liberals being burdened with Dion. Policies/ideas like this are it.

I don't watch TV or ride the subway. I do hear an ad on radio every now and then.

The difference of course being that I can choose not to watch/listen. Here I have to avoid buying gas.

The difference of course being that I can choose not to watch/listen. Please, you've no more choice in looking at Subway ads than you do watching the ads at gas stations.

Here I have to avoid buying gas. No, you don't. Not all gas stations have the TVs. Most do not. Yours do not, even.

If your issue is against advertising everywhere, that is a valid discussion. But to blame the government here for including gas stations as a venue for advertising, when they were clearly just one of many mediums available to the ad company they hired, is ridiculous.

The way you and most media are acting and portraying this is the conservatives are subverting every aspect of life. The evil conservatives are installing TVs at life-critical locations to inundate us with supreme propaganda!

A well-reasoned individual would take this away from the situation:
1) The convervatives are using 100% private money to do this, not public
2) The conservatives are only using existing TVs-at-the-pumps showing existing advertising to show the ad which would come at the replacement of the very annoying Pizza Pizza jingle-ads.

This is not a big deal, nor is it worth the front-page hysteria it is getting in terms of media coverage.

FWIW, I quite like the TVs. Most of the content they show are headlines, forecasts, etc. which keep me sufficiently entertained. It's no worse than the "OneStop" plasma screens on the subway or in my apartment building.

You can't make this **** up.

http://www.thestar.com/News/GTA/article/439875

In the very same paper that The Star blasts the conservatives for using TVs at the pumps for advertising, they pimp up the 26,000 new billboards coming to Toronto in the way of bus shelters provided by an advertising company.

I don't see it as mutually exclusive to run advertisements and to talk to media.

I have heard "unavailable for comment" more in the last 2.5 years than in the decades before. They are stunningly inaccessable. Don't go BenK on me. As far as I'm concerned I hear too much from Harper, so I don't share your frustration in the lack of his voice.

I'm not sure what value we get out of hearing politicians spew bullshit. All politicians lie. Every word out of their mouth is a waste of air.

Don't listen to a word any politician says. Ever. Judge only by actions. The less they talk, the better.

I'm sorry but I want policies to be talked about before being implemented.

Btw, I heard one of the ads on the radio on the way home today. Does the guy doing the voice over look as nerdy as he sounds?

I am no fan of Dion, but what is the big fuss about carbon taxes? BC already has one. It will inevitably follow in other jurisdictions.

Carbon taxes is a tax on the interior and a north to fund more social programs and busses down in Vancouver. We pay all the tax and receive none of the benefits.

I wouldn't give a dime to Campbell until the policy reverses.

Do you mean that Northern BC is somehow trapped in its own physical reality and exempt from the climate change engulfing the rest of the planet.

It's also **** because it says the taxpayers will be funding the ads, when they are funded 100% by private contributors to the conservative party.
